I lay in bed, trying to recall the night from a few days ago. I tried to remember how I felt, being in his arms, his warmth, his soft supportive words.
Wait...What the hell am I thinking? Why am I thinking about him this way? Why does he make me feel this way? Am I forgetting who he is? He's a murder, he killed me. I should be furious with him. I should hate him. But why don't I? Ugh, just...stop thinking about it. What day is it? I turned over to look at the calendar on my wall across the room. Sunday. It's the challenge day. Today's gonna be tough... What time is it? I turned over again to grab my phone on the windowsill. With a flick of my wrist, my phone swung open. I jolted up. It's 10:30. I'm late! I quickly pulled on my clothes and scrambled for my things. I stumbled down the stairs and grabbed at the door.
"Good morning Neku, why in such a rush?" A soft voice spoke from the kitchen.
It was mom.
"Can't talk Mom, love you." I sputtered out as I opened the door and ran out.
I made my way around crowds of people quickly.
Damn it! I'm late.
As I ran, dread and shame filled my body. I ran through the open entrance, gasping for air. I was greeted by everyone looking at me.
"Well, look who decided to show up." Joshua said smugly
"Yeah man, what gives?" Beat joined in
"Sorry...I overslept"
"We thought you were going to be a no-show..." Shiki stepped in "But I guess what matters is that you're here now" she continued
"Alright, now that everyone's here, why don't you all get started? Let me know if I can help at all." Mr.H joined in.
"Will do Mr.H!" Rhyme piped in with a sweet tone.
We all gathered around a small wooden table. V and Akane sat next to each other while Joshua and Rhyme sat on the other end. The rest of us stood around the table.
"Neku, I should let you know we already partnered up." Shiki told me. "We paired you with V and Joshua. I hope that's alright."
"It's...fine" I lied. Me and Josh hadn't really talked since that night, and I barely know V. This is gonna be a really tough day.
"Hey V, I don't mean to be rude but why do you always wear that mask? I mean, I've never seen you without it."
V turned towards the window, crossing his arms and shuffling further into his seat.
"Personal reasons..."
Rhyme looked like she wanted to ask more, but she didn't. Maybe it's because she knew that's all she was going to get out of him.
"So has anyone looked at the mission mail yet?" Josh asked, quickly changing the subject.
Everyone said no.
"Well, now we have a start."
Josh flipped open his phone and pressed a few buttons. He gave his phone a confused look. Everyone opened their phones while Rhyme looked on with Beat.
