So, I've recently posted something on Tumblr, and it was a list of tips of how to improve in writing fanfics, and more importantly, what NOT to do.
I have indeed made all of these mistakes, and I still do. So I'm no different from you.
Also, I will be pulling a lot of tough love moments. You are all great, but for this one part, I am going to have to be a bit harsh with some of these tips.
It's not going to be like an elementary school, where if you made the same mistake multiple times, it's fine. I won't specify certain people, but I will not hesitate to reference your stories if I have read them. And I have read a lot of them. I'll also reference mine, since I've made these mistakes as well.
Just to note, this list is made for all ships, but the examples made will be Andi Mack related.
With that being said, let's get started.

What Not To Do:
1. Bad Character
This is referring to any character that's just naturally a bad person. The one that threatens the relationship just because they're a cold hearted snake.Example: Amber threatens to ruin Andi and Jonah's relationship.
What I find very problematic about this is that you're not really giving the "bad" character much of a chance to have development. They're only there to cause trouble.
What to do: What you could do is make that character a good person. Or at the very least, give them some sort of motive for doing it. And I don't mean some sort of break up happened, or a long time grudge.

2. Competitor
You have no idea how often I have come across this. Naturally, there's two ships that have the same person. For example, Jandi, and Jyrus. And then this happens...Example: Jonah and Cyrus start dating, and then Andi hates them both because she can't have Jonah.
Why is this a problem? Because of the fact that A, it's too predictable and cliche. And B, it's completely "out of character"(OOC) for the person to hate them afterwards. I mean, sure they're humans. They're going to make show emotion, but a sudden change in personality isn't a natural thing.
What to do: Consider finding another form of the problem. They could show a more natural form of resentment. Maybe by being depressed, not angry. Maybe by pushing those closest to them away. Any of those would be fine, because it's a bit more natural. I mean, you wouldn't suddenly hate your close friend just because they dated your crush.

3. "I'm So Sorry!"
Another thing that really bothers me is when that one person from either 1 or 2 has like a huge plan to ruin the relationship, and they feel terrible afterwards.Example: Andi tries to convince Cyrus that he and Jonah are still dating. Then she immediately feels like an idiot and begs for forgiveness.
If you have a character do that, it doesn't seem real. It actually feels like they're faking the sorrow.
What to do: If you're going to make the character do the bad act, keep them bad. And if you're going to give them redemption, don't make it automatic. Give it time for the forgiveness to happen.
