"Alright," Raph sighed, leaning against a pole. "This is it." They'd made it to the nearest train station, having hauled the majority of their camp equipment along with them. The plan was simple: Jump off at the nearest station to the TCRI plant, meet up with the rebel who'd previously snuck in, give him the explosives and leave.
Donnie froze as the the train rolled in, staring at the tin walls on the snakelike mode of transport. "L-last time I was on one of these things, I was abandoned for 12 years." He murmured, only just audible enough for Raph to hear.
"It's ok." He reassured, a look of disgust plastered on his face as he too glared at the train. "We're sticking together this time."
"Hold on!" A shrill voice cried from the distance. To Raph and Donnie's horror, April trotted up to them, flailing her arms.
"I got your message Mikey." She grinned smugly, stepping onto the train with LH.
Raph spun around narrowing his eyes slightly. "You invited her."
Mikey just laughed, shaking his head as he boarded. "Come on guys, she not that bad when you get to know her."
Donnie didn't say anything, taking one doubtful glance back at the platform before following the others.
The cabins were spacious with seats lined up alongside each other. The train jolted slightly, a churning, gravely sound emitting as the engine awoke.
Donnie planted himself on a seat next to the window, staring out into the dusty plains he called home. He still hasn't entirely come to terms with the return of his brothers, letting the event gradually unravel itself in his mind. Despite the sudden addition of four people to his life, Donnie couldn't help but feel a bitter emptiness in his heart. Like a jigsaw missing one vital piece, the piece that completed the picture.
He swallowed his doubt, averting his eyes from the window.
The group sat in deafening silence, anticipating a conversation that never started.
"Does anyone wanna play cards?" April suddenly chirped, pulling out a small pack from her back. Raph just shrugged, sinking further into his seat as April began to deal.
Before long, Donnie had been dubbed victorious after winning the majority of the card games and presently found himself staring intensely at Raph, watching as he played his final card.
"I win." He sneered, laughing as Raph slammed his fist on the wall in defeat, slumping down as he sulked. Donnie flashed his winning card to the others, breathing a quick sigh of relief. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of April, beaming as though she'd achieved something. He couldn't help but smile as he felt his heart soften, warming up to the girl slightly despite their previous disputes.
The screeching of metal erupted around them, gasps echoing around the cabins as the train jolted, halting unexpectedly.
"No..." Raph shook his head in disbelief, grabbing Donnie's hand. He held his breath, listening as the faint sound of footsteps shuffled outside.
"Who is it?" Donnie whispered, wincing as the person outside drew closer. The train door was then ripped off its hinges and flung to the side, revealing a bulky man, face obscured underneath a huge mask, daggers protruding from his covered hands.
The blurred faces of several others followed him into the cabin, immediately heading to restrain those on board, knocking multiple out with tasers.
Donnie cried out as the man approached him, staring directly into his cold eyes. At that moment, he felt paralysed, engulfed in unimaginable fear. The unconscious bodies of his brothers lay next to him, having been tased some time before. He lost track of all that was going on around him, too focused on those revenge thirsty pupils to comprehend what was about to happen.
"Who are you?" He murmured, voice trembling as he pressed himself further into the corner he'd fallen into.
The man leaned towards him, eye contact unwavering.
"I am Oroku Saki." He spat. It was the last thing Donnie heard before he was embraced by darkness.
