Death. It was black, and dark. I couldn’t see anything, but yet I felt aware of myself. I could feel my body.

I started to hear something. It was a voice. It was deep and smooth. But what was it saying. I listened intently but it was too low, too far away for me to hear. Then I felt something pound against my chest. Owww, that kind of hurt. There was another pound. I heard that voice again and it seemed to be getting louder. I kept listening and there was still a pounding on my chest. As the seconds went by the voice got louder. Then I finally understood it. Breathe! They were saying breathe. Wait, I wasn’t breathing? I took a deep breath and my throat burned. It felt like vomit rushed up my throat and pushed through.

A liquid came up and poured from my mouth. I opened my eyes and over me was a man. I quickly forgot about him when more came up my throat. I turned my head and threw up some more. I don’t really know if it counts as vomit because I’m pretty sure it was just water but damn it hurt worse than throwing up.

I coughed a few times and my throat burned. “Are you alright?” I looked back to the mysterious man.

“Did you save me?” I asked in a hoarse whisper. He nodded. I really looked at him and took in my savior. He had bright blue eyes, and dark hair. It looked black but it was so dark I couldn’t tell. He was wet. Probably from saving me. He wrapped and arm around me and he lifted me up. When I was sitting up I coughed a few more times, and a few more drops of water came up my throat.

I looked at him again and he was even more beautiful face to face. His face was like that of a male model from a fashion magazine. I kept staring at him, and he kept staring at me. I know it’s rude but wow, he was….beautiful. “Mine” he whispered. Oh no. Fear washed through me. I found my mate.

Before I could argue with him he leaned down and brushed his lips against mine. Everything went quiet and my heart stopped. The kiss was wonderful. Heat rose in me and my heart started to beat double time. I kissed him back and it got even better. He grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me closer to him. When he finally pulled away we were both breathing hard.

“I should get you inside. You’re shivering.” I was? Damn I was. I was shivering really badly. He howled up at the moon.

“What are you some animal?” I asked trying to be funny. He looked at me shocked. I looked away from his beautiful eyes. “It was a joke.” Under my breath I mumbled “Apparently a bad one.” He chuckled and I looked at him surprised.

“You’re funny.” I smiled but quickly forced it away. A wolf came through the trees and in its jaws was a jacket. He took it from the wolf and put it around my shoulders.

I slipped my arms into the jacket and zipped it up. It was warm and smelled amazing. “Is this your pet wolf that does all your biding?” He looked at me shocked again. “It was a joke again.”

He laughed. “He’s not a pet, but he does have to do my….biding as you put it. All wolves have to obey their alpha.”

My eyes went wide. I jumped up and yelled “You’re an alpha?” My throat hurt and it made me cough. I rubbed my throat and looked at him completely uninterested. He stood up and came over to me.

“I am.”

“Nuh-uh. No way. I refuse to be mated to an alpha.”

“Why’s that?” he asked in a low voice. I looked at him, noticing the slight hurt in his voice.

“It’s nothing against you, but with an alpha comes a lot of aggression.”

He smirked. “Was the little pup beaten down by her alpha?” He was treating this like a joke.
