Nia started to break down and tears fell from her eyes. She nodded her head. I rushed over and hugged her. Poor Nia, this had to be horrible for her. Being pregnant and having to wonder if your mate is alright or not, that has to be so…hard. I had to suck up my feelings and be there for her Nia, she needs me right now.

“Don’t worry Nia. No matter what I’ll be here to help you out.” Nia nodded and clutched onto me for a while.

Once Nia was better we started walking again. Later that same day we came upon the second city and I was glad for that. We stopped for the night just on the outside of the city. The next day we started later in the day. Nia was quiet and very often I knew she was in her mind. It had to be a lot to be pregnant and have to worry about your mate. A pang of hurt went through me at the thought of mates. I had been avoiding thinking of Cam but it was hard when everything you think goes back to him.

We walked al that day and I was hoping the third city would be close like the other two were but as the sun started to get dimmer, I was getting depressed. It was going to be a long way to getting Jack home. We were getting tired. I was holding Jack in my arms and I was about to jump over a fallen tree when I heard a crack. I stopped and looked around the green forest. I held Jack tighter into me and he made a slight noise noticing my unrest. Everything was calm, nothing at all was moving. Maybe I was being paranoid.

I jumped over the fallen tree and then I felt a pressure. There was a threat near, I knew it. I whipped my head around, my eyes alert and I searched for the threat. A dark gray wolf popped out from the shadows of the forest and I had seen him just in time to duck. He skidded across the forest and whipped around to growl at us. I clutched on to Jack terrified for him. Something inside me urged me to keep him safe. So I would. No matter what, I wouldn’t let anything happen to him as long as I was breathing.

“Nia!” I shouted. She was a little ahead of us but she was already alerted to the attack we were under. Nia looked frozen and torn. We must be on this wolf’s pack’s territory. I looked back to the wolf who had his muzzle back, snarling, showing his sharp and dangerous teeth. What should I do? I didn’t have an idea. If it was just me I would have fought back, but…it wasn’t just me. I had Jack in my arms, and I couldn’t bear to leave him alone. Putting him down wasn’t an option. He would only be safe with me.

So the question still remains, what should I do?

I was about to turn and run when all the sudden there was an even greater presence. Oh no, it could be his alpha. We are so screwed if it is. A huge wolf sprang from the forest and attacked the wolf. They rolled to the ground, biting and fighting. I was so shocked it couldn’t do anything but clutch Jack in my arms and stare at the fight just a few feet from my feet. As things began to process in my mind I realized that the scent was familiar. I knew this alpha. I took a deep whiff and I realized the scent. It was Nate. The extra spice to his smell was Nia, and there bond. I looked back and Nia was looking at the fight with different emotions playing across her face. There was wonder, and shock, and a great deal of happiness. I was so happy for her.

But then something occurred to me. If Nate was here, it meant that Nate and Cam weren’t the two wolves the hunters were talking about. My mate is okay. I looked around the forest wondering if he had come with Nate as well. There was nothing and the forest was silent besides the two wolves in front of me tearing each other apart. Where is Cam?

It took a few minutes but in the end the attacking wolf whimpered and backed off. He wasn’t a match for an alpha. Nate turned and looked at Nia. They stared at each other for a moment and then Nate shifted. I looked away, not wanting to see him naked. “Nia” he said in a hoarse voice. In my peripherals I saw her run to him and I decided it would be best for me to give them a few moments to themselves. This was a very special moment for them, especially since Nia was pregnant.
