Nia did as I asked and soon we were in Nate’s truck headed towards my home. When I told Nate where I was from he automatically knew where I was talking about. Nate I guess was sort of friends with Cam. Or at least they were civil towards each other. Their packs had worked together to repel a group of intruding wolves that tried to take over parts of both their territory. Alphas don’t really get along. Too much pride and aggression. Neighboring packs have constant fights over territory, and other matters.
I laid out in the back seat, while Nia sat in the passenger seat next to Nate. There light music playing, but the air in the truck was tense. “I’m going to miss you Kasha” Nia said breaking the silence.
“I’ll miss you too.” It was true I was. For the rest of the ride Nia talked to me. I had really come to like this girl. It was a long drive there and I felt so much better as the hours went by. It was night by the time we got onto a familiar road. We were getting very close. My heart started beating harder at the thought of seeing Cam soon. So much for my plan.
It took twenty minutes to pull up into the town. “Where should I stop?” Nate asked.
“Why don’t you just step outside and give the wolves a heart attack that an alpha is on their land” I said sarcastically.
Nate stopped the car on the side of the road. “Okay.”
“Nate I was kidding.”
“I’ll be fine.” Nate got out of the car. We walked to the sidewalk and stood there. I looked out the window. What if they hurt Nate?
Nate stood there and as the minutes passed I saw how bored he was getting. Went to the other side and rolled down the window. “Roar.” Nate looked at me like I was nuts. “Roar, growl…do something. They may not be around here. But just so you know I think this is a bad idea.” Nate rolled his eyes.
Nate crouched down and it looked like he was going to attack the truck. He roared and the fury that resonated in it made me pause. Man, Nate could sure sound like a monster when he wanted to. I looked out the other window and I saw a man across the street looking at Nate with fear. He just stood there like he was frozen. Petrified of the threat that is Nate. Well Nate was a threat, I bet he was just a normal wolf, no match for an alpha.
Nate growled and he had locked eyes with the scared wolf. That seemed to snap the wolf out of his trance. He howled an alert and then ran off. I heard Nate chuckle. I stuck my head out of the window and said “Get in the car.”
Nia stuck her head out too. “Come on Nate. We need to take this out of the middle of town.”
Nate rushed to the driver’s side and hopped in the car. We raced out of the middle of town. “Where to?”
“Turn right at the next light and then just stay on that road. It leads right into the woods.” Nate followed my instructions. Not long we were in the woods.
“Nate” Nia said sounding a little worried. “They’re following us. They’re in the woods.” I looked and sure enough I saw the pack of wolves running in the woods to keep up with the truck.
I looked forward and in the middle of the woods was a huge black and white wolf. “Nate!” I screamed. He looked forward and he slammed on the brakes. We came to a skidding halt. We were going too fast, there was no way we weren’t going to hit the wolf. My heart was beating fast. A scream was starting to make its way up my throat. Just as we were about to hit the wolf it sprang backwards, putting more distance between us. When the truck stopped the scream disappeared in my throat and I took deep breaths.
Nate jumped out of the car furious. He was snarling. “What kind of stupid stunt was that? You could have gotten yourself killed, or injured my mate.” Nate was hulking over the wolf.
