As I laid in Nate’s back seat on my way back home. My mind was reeling with thoughts. I thought of Jack and of Anna and Shane. I worried about Cam. My last hope was that he was back home. I would be happy he was safe and then kill him for not looking for me.
Shane and Anna were Jack’s parents and they were very nice. They were a small family moving around. Almost like rogues, but in a family. They didn’t have a pack, yet they had the power of alphas. It was hard to understand but I didn’t try to pry into their lives.
When we finally got back to my town I nearly jumped out as Nate’s car was still moving. He parked and I jumped out, my eyes whipping around and my heart beating faster than I ever thought it possibly could. I howled, calling him. Calling my mate. This was my pack. I was alpha female. They would recognize me.
Some heads looked back at me. Their eyes blazing. A few came over standing in front of me. Their eyes looked hopeful. As I continued to wait the little shred of hope I had been carrying was starting to die. Cam wasn’t here.
I looked to one wolf with blazing eyes. He was tall with light brown hair and brown eyes. He looked my age, maybe older. “Take me to Cam’s house” I demanded.
He nodded. “Yes Alpha” he said in a deep voice. “Follow me.”
I looked back at Nia and Nate. They had been watching me from inside their car since I had stepped out. I went to the passenger window where Nia was. I smiled at her. “Thank you guys for everything. I have to go straighten out a few things, but I swear once everything is better I’ll come check on you.”
Nia smiled. “Good.” She put a hand over her flat stomach. “This pup is going to need his godmother.”
I smiled at her. “Be safe” I said.
“No Kasha” Nate said in a gentle but serious way, “You be careful. If you need anything just call.”
I left and followed the boy that I had talked to. He took me to a car and I got in the passenger side. The then took off. My mind was beyond a mess. My heart well that was easy. It was broken. It was slowly being ripped apart as each minute went on of me not know where Cam was. What had happened to him? Was he even alive? A whimper escaped me and I really hoped the boy hadn’t heard it but I knew he had.
“It’s okay alpha. I’m sure Cam is fine.” I looked over at the boy he was giving me a reassuring smile that actually wasn’t that reassuring.
“What is your name?” I asked. I tried to sound tough, or at least stable but even I could hear the pain in it.
“I’m Ryder. I’m Patrick’s brother.” I just looked at him confused. Was I supposed to know who Patrick was? “Patrick is Cam’s beta.” I nodded in understanding.
The rest of the drive was in silence. I couldn’t think past my heartbreak to be polite to him but I don’t think he minded. We pulled up to a big house. I walked out and expected Ryder to follow but when I stepped onto the porch I noticed he wasn’t following me. I looked back and he was still in his car. I looked back at him pleading.
He poked his head out of his window. “Do you want me to go with you?” he called. I nodded my head silently. Even as much as a stranger he was, I knew him better than I knew Cam’s parents. I hadn’t met them or even knew what they looked like. I wondered if they would except me. Ryder cam jogging up and stood behind me.
I knocked on the door. Why did this feel so scary? Why was I scared? I hadn’t done anything wrong.
The door opened and standing there was a woman looking about in her late thirties. She had shoulder length brown hair, and brown eyes. She looked very lean and fit. “Ummm, my name is Kasha-”
That’s all I got out before she interrupted me. “Kasha!?” she asked with surprise and delight. She then picked me up in a hug and squeezed me tight. “Thank goodness you are okay. We had been worried sick.” She set me down and I took a big breathing filling my lungs with the oxygen se had squeezed out. “I thought I had heard a call. Was that you?”
I nodded. “I wanted to talk with Cam’s parents.”
Her smile got wider. “Well hi. I’m Linda, his mom.”
“Hi.”
“Please come in.” I walked in and she looked back and smiled at Ryder. “And Ryder, it’s always nice to see you.”
“How are you doing Ms. J?”
She gave him a sad but trying to be tough smile. “It’s tough.”
He gave her a hug. We walked in. “This way Kasha,” she said. “His father is this way. He has been acting as Alpha while you two were away.”
We followed her up some stairs, down a long hall and to the last door. She knocked and then poked her head in. “Dear, Kasha is here.” She opened it fully, stepping aside so we could walk in. She closed the door her not inside. I was confused and slightly panicked. I was about to meet a new Alpha. If you hadn’t noticed by know I have a problem with Alphas.
I looked over at the man that was smiling at me. He was ssititng in a chair behind a big desk. He looked exactly like Cam. Same jaw, dark hair, and lips. Seeing him just made me want to break down. He was a reminder of what I had lost and wanted most. I took a step back and my lip started to quiver. His smiled faded. Tears were pushing through and I took another step back. My back came into contact with something. I looked back and I had run into Ryder’s chest. He reached out and grabbed my arm. The sad look in his eyes was more than I could take and I lost.
I couldn’t believe I had just broken down in front of these two complete strangers. I don’t let anyone see me cry. I turned and hid my face in Ryder’s chest. He wrapped his arms around me. I felt an odd bit of safety in his arms. He quietly shushed me as I sobbed. “It’s okay Kasha” he whispered to me.
In about five minutes I calmed back down and I looked up at him. He smiled and wiped the stray tears away from my face. “Thank you” I whispered to him. He smiled and spun me around. I then came face to face with Cam’s dad again. He was leaning against the large desk he had in the middle of the room.
“I’m sorry Kasha. I know this is hard. The loss of an Alpha is something we all hate.” He gripped harder onto the edge. “And the loss of a son.”
“He’s not dead” I shouted at him.
He looked at me shocked. “How do you know?” he asked hopeful.
My eyes darkened. “I…I just do. I know he’s still alive. My heart tells me so.”
He gave me a sad smile. “I hope your right.” He sighed and then went back to sitting in his chair. “Unfortunately thought until he does come back this pack is Alpha less.”
“Can’t you take over?” I asked.
He shook his head. “He mated you, sealing his Alpha title. I can no longer take over. You are the next Alpha to this pack.” My mouth almost fell. He eyes became clouded and then he said “If you do not wish to be Alpha you must go before the pack and relinquish your title. Then the males will fight until one stands triumphant and a new line is put in charge.”
I shook my head. “No. Cam is going to come back and he will take over as Alpha. I can do it.”
He looked at me uncertain. “Kasha I mean no offense, but do you know anything about being Alpha. It is more than it looks like.”
“I want to do it and I’ll have Ryder and Patrick help me.”
One of his brows raised. “Are you saying that you want Ryder as your beta.”
“I would like them both. They will be my helpers.”
