Blue Eyes

I've always been on the move— running towards the simplistic

Sprinting away from anything else

But when I saw that fire burning in the middle of the woods I stopped in my tracks, afraid to move

The ashes got in my eyes and I began to cry

I reached my fingertips towards the heat for warmth but got burnt

I looked across the fire and saw you

Our gazes met and all I saw was blue

Ocean waves took over— crashed its way towards the fire then to me

You later said that when you had looked into my brown eyes, ground soil shifted its attention to you

Between us began a battle between red and brown and blue

The flames flickered to the both of us, splitting from the middle

Your waves extinguished the heat but the soil I emitted did nothing to kill the fire

You kept your gaze on me as you quickened your pace

I did not move an inch

I was engulfed with red yet you still reached towards my outreached hand

I felt the immediate spark when our hands met

Maybe it was love

Maybe it was the fire

Either way we were both burning, the flames dancing on our skin

You closed your eyes in content but mine were unblinking, realizing that I had been still for much too long

I squeezed you tight with regret and I ripped myself from you and the fire, leaving you to burn alone

I ran as fast as I could and extinguished any traces of red and blue on me

I turned around one last time and expected red

But all I saw was blue
