My friend once told me after I threatened his prospective girlfriend with pain if she hurt him that "an eye for an eye blind the world".
I think he's right. An eye for an eye does blind the world, but sometimes the world needs to be blinded. This may sound cruel, but I speak only in metaphors. I don't mean they need to truly be physically blind with the inability to see anything ever again.
No.
I think that sometimes you need to be metaphorically blinded. You sometimes need to be blinded from appearance and the outward show of anxiety and nerves — the scars of insecurities left from past break ups. You sometimes need to not see the person in front of you by their ticks or their clothes, but instead by their thoughts and their emotions. Sometimes you need to be blinded to see the pain and the scars of others.
When we are blind to their facade or their outward appearance, we see with great light their feelings and emotions. We see their heart and soul and all that they've done. We see not their mask. We see them for who they truly are. We see the impact they have on the world around them. We see the people they love and that love them. Sometimes, when we are blinded we learn more about that person through the one who blinded us then we ever took the time to learn from them.
It has been said to me "An eye for an eye makes the world blind," but maybe sometimes, the world needs to be blind.
