Washington DC
A day before Christmas Morning Sarah arrived in DC to spend Christmas with her brother, sister in law and her niece and nephew. They were so excited to see her again. The whole family picked her up at the airport but her brother was the only one waiting for her at arrivals. After she emerged the doors he hugged her. "I'm glad that you came!" he said and took her suitcase.
After starting to walk he asked her if she was okay. She looked at him and whispered a "Yes." She's feeling better now, more at ease. Thinking that maybe she could look back to the times with her best friend without thinking about what had happened and that she had failed.
"Then I'm glad. Come on, they're waiting" he replied, referring to his family. She had only called yesterday to announce her decision to come for Christmas and that she got a last minute ticket.
Unfortunately, she was only able to stay for a couple of days. Her flight back was on the 29th. So that she had enough time to prepare for the first day at Chicago Med. Nevertheless, she wanted to enjoy the time she spent with them and do all kinds of fun things.
On the 25th they opened Presents and played Monopoly almost the whole day. Later on, Sarah was making Dinner with her sister in law Andrea.
Where they did have a talk about a certain someone Sarah didn't want to admit she liked.
"Are you looking forward to working with the ED?" Andrea asked her.
"Yes, I can't wait. I never worked on real patients before and it scares me. What if I'm not enough or if someone dies because of me?" Sarah had a lot of worries and most of the worries have one trigger. All Andrea could do was to try and calm her nerves.
"Sarah, you will graduate as one of the best students of the year and people die. You can't influence who dies and who doesn't. All you need to do is to be the best possible doctor you can be and it will be more than enough. Being a doctor is your dream, it doesn't matter why you have this dream, all that counts is that you are going to be a doctor!" she said and Sarah was really speechless. Andrea and she had a great bond, like sisters she never had but needed. She could talk to her about her fears, worries, and excitement without being judged and Andrea's advice always was the best.
She loved her friends in Chicago dearly, but will their friendship stand the chance of being work colleagues as well? Would she lose them or still be friends with them?
These fears and worries kept her awake at night and she wanted them to stop so badly but she couldn't. She still hasn't found this one thing that could shut up her mind.
"Can we go Ice Skating tomorrow?" the kids asked after they came into the kitchen. They got ice skates as a Christmas Present from their Grandparents and wanted them to try so badly that eventually Andrea gave in and they planned to go to the ice rink the next day. Sarah loved skating and her niece and nephew so she was really looking forward to tomorrow, were she could just enjoy spending time with the kids. No thought about work, love or anything else.
