Max's POV
We started to walk towards the cafeteria. Lunch would definitely be interesting today. I couldn't believe El was here. She wouldn't be very happy about my role in the party.
When she saw me sitting in class, she glared at me. It was so fast. No one else saw it because she was cut off by Mr Clarke speaking to her.
I was sure Lucas wouldn't believe me, but I had to try. Will and Dustin were behind us, and El and Mike had disappeared.
"Lucas. What are we gonna do about lunch? Eleven hates me. You saw the look she gave me the night she closed the gate. It was the same look when she walked into science today."
"That's not true, Max. She doesn't hate you. She's just...moody. She was overwhelmed that night. She was catching up with us, that's all. She took a while to warm up to me."
He really wasn't getting the point. I was going to continue arguing when we turned the corner into the cafeteria. Too late now.
We sat down at our usual table. Mike's seat was empty as was the seat beside him. He wouldn't let anyone sit there. All year. He claimed that sitting in El's seat was like admitting that she was gone. I never really understood it.
She never even attended school. Why was that her seat? Dustin said he always saved a place for her. Honestly it was kind of sad. We all just kinda played along. No one took Eleven's seat.
Even when Mike wasn't at school that day. That seat was for Eleven. And we were not giving up on her. Ever.
