So, The Volturi are basically the court system in Twilight, i.e. They decide whether or not you can live, depending on how well you live up to their rules.
We meet them in New Moon, and I thought they were pretty badass. I mean, they could kill you in the blink of an eye! That's amazing if you think about it. But here's the thing. They meet Edward, Alice and Bella, happy to see that Edward hadn't caused enough trouble to kill the guy. But they were pissed because Bella was a human, and knew everything about vampires, and Edward didn't want to change her (Don't blame him, myself. Who would WANT her to be around for eternity?). So, they struck a deal that Bella would eventually be turned and everyone would live happily ever after. That is, until Aro decides to see if Bella's mind is mentally bulletproof. Edward goes all 'hero' and takes the damage. Suffice to say, nothing happened to Bella, and they walked out before the feeding began. That's what pissed me off. They didn't force them out with a, 'If you don't turn her, we'll hunt you down and kill you all!'. No it was a, 'She'll be turned soon. We may or not check up the status sometime, be on your way!'. Idiotic if you ask me.
Then in Eclipse, we only see Jane, Felix, Demetri and Alec. They come along after a kickass battle. They were all calm and in control. Until they noticed the brand new New Born. They decide, 'So what if the Cullens said she could live? We're in charge. Fuck 'em.' and killed the kid. With the parting words, 'Caius will be happy to see that you're still human.' They walk away, back into the smoke. A bit bitchy if you ask me. They could've been a bit more threatening you know. Be all in charge and ready to kill Bella, but oh no, they just walk away.
Now, in Breaking Dawn, things get interesting. The Volturi decide that the Cullens have an Immortal Child, and decide to kill them. They come along, all of them. Suddenly, a huge debate goes on, whether or not the kid really is one of the banned. So they bring the person who claimed that it was an immortal child to come forward. She realizes that she was wrong, and guess what Caius does? He lifts a lighter up in the air, and brings to life. Suddenly the vamp's dead. But to me it was all, 'Look at me! I gots a lighter! I can make fire with it! No one else knows this! I iz powerful!!!!' Yeah, that's how I interpreted it.
Now, here's the kicker. They again, go into a debate, since killing someone didn't cause the battle they wanted. So, they decide that they were wrong and are ashamed that something like this happened. All in all, they were just idiots. So then they WALK AWAY. They just waltz right out of there as if nothing happened. Yeah, they left Italy, either swam or took a flight to America, only to go all the way with no accomplishments. Yeah, great work Volturi! You sure showed them! *Claps mockingly*
So yeah, there really is no point for them within the last two books. I mean, don't get me wrong, they look great in the movie, but I mean, to just frolic to some place (I assume) they hate, and go back, hating the place more, is just a big ol' waste of immortal time.
Ps. this is me just going on and on against Breaking Dawn because that book was a piece of crap.
