Chapter 6

Anthony

I walked into school from the frigid winter air, shaking off a few flakes of snow from my jacket. As I ran my hand through my hair, I caught a glimpse of a familiar figure and grinned.

I started to walk towards Skylar's locker but Tessa appeared in front of me with a large smile on her face.

"Hey," She smiled and placed a quick kiss on my cheek. "What's up?"

"Nothing much," I shrugged and forced a smile on my face. I hated that feeling; the feeling like I'm forcing myself to do everything when I'm around Tessa. "What about you?"

"Wellllll," She said with a sheepish grin. "I was thinking; Why wait till the winter formal for our first official date when we can go on one now!?"

"What? Y-Yeah sure. We can," I stuttered, caught off guard by her forwardness.

"I don't know. That's only if you want to," She settled down. Her smile slowly melted off her face and instantly I felt guilt creep into my system. Maybe I wasn't giving her the attention she deserved. I just needed to suppress whatever feelings I felt for Skylar on that night and focus all my attention on Tessa. Whatever it was that I felt, it didn't matter anymore. I was with Tessa now, and I needed to focus on that.

"No. No. I'm sorry," I apologized and rubbed the back of my neck. "I'm sorry I didn't ask you out sooner. I've just been um... distracted."

"It's okay," She gave me a sad smile. "I just. Um. I just can't r-really-"

"Come here," I sighed and pulled her to the side of the hallway when I realized she was literally about to cry.

"I-I want to be with you, okay?" I said, trying to convince myself more than her. It hurt to see her like this, and I felt obligated to comfort her, no matter what my feelings were.

"B-but. I-"

"I want to be with you," I repeated, this time with more confidence. Slowly I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers. It was quick and awkward. Our lips didn't move in sync and her forehead kept bumping mine. On top of that, when I pulled away, she leaned more forward, clearly indicating that she intended to keep kissing. When I finally got out of the awkward lip lock, I looked at her face and instantly knew I made the right decision in kissing her.

Her eyes were lit up and her smile was wide. It may have been one of the most awkward kisses I've ever been involved in, but her reaction made it worth it. I wanted to reassure her that I wanted to be her boyfriend, and this was the quickest solution I could think of.

"So about that date?" She grinned.

"Yes. Yeah," I laughed and took a deep breath. "Tessa Ross, will you make me the happiest man on Earth and go on a date with me?" I recited the cliche line, trying very hard not to cringe. I was pretty sure she liked cliche stuff like this, and my suspicions were confirmed when she started squealing.

"Yes! Yay! Oh my god!" She jumped up and down and threw her arms around my neck. The sudden momentum caused me to stagger, but I quickly regained control.

"So, where should we go?" I asked, taking her hand. We started walking as she thoughtfully tried to answer.

"Hm, I don't know. Ohhh we should go to that new restaurant on 6th avenue! Oh! Or we can go to the mall and shop! Ahhh oh wait! What about Disney World!?" She exclaimed. People were starting to stare, making blood rush to my cheeks.
