Chapter 5

Skylar

I saw them in the hall the next day. Tessa was at his locker, laughing away, seeming like she was enjoying herself quite a bit. He said yes to her proposal for the winter formal, he had to have. I sighed and turned away from them. I suppose his heart told him to get together with Tessa.

"Fuck," I muttered to myself, feeling tears threaten to fall. God, why did I care so much? I was supposed to be Tessa's best friend, but I can't even be happy for her.

I liked him. I couldn't even deny it anymore; at this point if I tried, it would seem completely ridiculous given that I was crying because my best friend just got together with her dream guy.

I quickly hustled by them, hoping they wouldn't see me. I was not in the mood to talk to the new happy couple. Right now, I just wanted to go home and curl up in a ball on my bed to hide from everyone.

"Hey! Skylar!" A familiar voice called out to me in the hall. I stopped in my tracks and internally groaned, causing multiple annoyed remarks from the people behind me who now had to go around. Slowly, I turned around, dreading the next few moments to come.

"Hey!" I forced myself to put on a fake smile. Both Anthony and Tessa walked up to me, hand in hand. I clenched my hands into fists in attempt to suppress the frustrated grunt that was about to come out of my mouth. "Look at what we have here."

"I know right!" Tessa squeaked. I saw her grip his hand tighter as her smile widened.

"I must say, you two make a very cute couple," I let out a pained laugh, hoping neither of them noticed.

"Glad we have your full approval," Anthony said while eyeing me, as if it was a question.

"Yep," I curtly said, trying to end this dreadful conversation as quickly as possible. That seemed to satisfy Anthony, and his shoulders relaxed a little. I mean, I wasn't a monster. I obviously wanted Tessa to be happy, but I just wished she would be happy with someone else.

"So I'm assuming you guys are going to the formal together?"

"Yup," Tessa said, popping the "p" at the end. The pop felt like a tiny explosion inside my body, digging into my already wounded heart further, just for the sake of torturing me.

"You should come with us," Anthony suggested as he fell into pace next to me.

"Um. Third wheeling? I'm okay," I scoffed. I wasn't much of a third wheel type of person; I don't think anyone is. And just seeing them dressed up all night and having a good time didn't seem like my definition of fun.

"Oh come on," Tessa pleaded and pouted her lips.

"I-I don't think so," I nervously laughed. "It's a few months away anyway. I think I have some time to think."

"Maybe you should ask someone else," Tessa suggestively raised her eyebrows. I knew who she was thinking of, and to be honest he couldn't be further from my mind.

"Who should she ask?" Anthony jumped into the conversation and looked at Tessa. "Who should you ask?" He asked again, looking at me this time. He raised and eyebrow and looked at me with concern.

"Why do you care," I scoffed and waved him off to avoid telling him. "And no, Tessa. I am not going to ask him, okay? Just because you're stuck in this lovey dovey trance does not mean you can start meddling with my love life."

"Okay, okay," She put her hands up in defense. "Geez, who spit in your coffee this morning?"

"What? What are you talking about?" I rolled my eyes. I knew what she was talking about though; and my bitchy attitude probably had a lot to do with the fact that a certain boy was attached to her arm right now.

"Okay, can someone just tell me who he is?!" Anthony spoke over us, catching our attention.

"He. Also known as, Hunter Evans," Tessa stated, as if it was national news.

"Hunter Evans!?" Anthony screamed in shock. I immediately slapped my hand over his mouth, and looked around to see if anyone heard.

"Damn it Anthony. People are staring," I sighed as I slowly removed my hand from his face.

"Anthony," Tessa scolded. "I can't take you anywhere," She rolled her eyes jokingly.

"Sorry, sorry," He put his hands up in defense. "But seriously? You like Hunter Evans?" He said lower this time.

"I-um," I hesitated, quickly eying Tessa. As far as she knew, I still liked Hunter and nothing ever happened between Anthony and I. "Yeah," I lied.

"He's a dick," Anthony muttered to himself, probably thinking I couldn't hear.

"He is not. He's super nice to me," I defended him out of habit. Anthony was about to argue but thankfully, I was saved by the bell.

"Bye guys!" I said before scurrying off to class.

"We aren't done..." Anthony screamed before I ran out of earshot.
