Chapter 9

Skylar

"Shut. Up," Tessa's mouth hung open as we sat in the middle of the cafeteria. It's the first time we actually had a real conversation in over a week. Lately, Tessa has been so preoccupied with Anthony and her new relationship, so I didn't get to talk to her as much.

"Yeah. Not even lying," I nodded. "Hunter's his step brother."

"Oh my god. This is-I can't- What even is life," She mindlessly muttered, clearly completely mind blown.

"I know right. But you can't tell anyone... they like hate each other. They almost tore each other up yesterday," I said, but immediately regretted it.

"Yesterday?" She furrowed her eyebrows and cocked her head.

"Yeah, what was yesterday?" Anthony appeared with a lunch tray and sat next to her.

"Oh. I was just telling Tiff about how I saw you and Hunter in the hallway yesterday. You know, when I found out you two were step brothers," I lied through my teeth and gave Anthony a look.

We both agreed that we wouldn't tell Tessa about our "dinner date" yesterday because neither of us wanted her thinking anything was going on. Normally, it wouldn't matter because I could just tell her that there wasn't, but I unfortunately liked Anthony at the moment, and it would probably be really hard to convince her otherwise We actually agreed that we wouldn't tell her that we were hanging out at all unless she asked. We both thought it would be easier that way, and it's not like it's cheating...right? We were just friends. Friends can hang out...

"Oh right!" Anthony played along and slyly winked at me. God, he still looked hot winking. I'm in too deep. "Yeah, she saw us arguing, and figured it out."

"Why didn't you tell me about Hunter?" Tessa whispered and looked at him.

"I-I wasn't ready. No offense Skylar, but Hunter isn't exactly someone to be proud of," He shrugged. "I didn't want you to judge me."

"I wouldn't judge you," Tessa frowned. "You should know me better than that."

"I'm sorry, baby. I should have told you," He soothed and wrapped his arm around her in a comforting gesture. I cringed. 'Baby'. They're already on a nickname basis. They were moving faster than I thought...

"Okay. Well, if you'll excuse me, I need to go," I hastily said and stood up, trying to avoid a seriously awkward situation.

"What where?" Tessa asked.

"Hunter told me to wear something, and I quote, 'a booty showin tight ass little thing tonight,' for our date. I'm assuming that's his way of telling me to wear something nice," I rolled my eyes. "So since I have free next period, I need to go shopping."

"He told you to wear what?" Anthony shot up out of his seat, looking at me with raised eyebrows. I saw him clench his fists so tight his knuckles turned white, and all the blood rushed to his face.

"Oh my god, Anthony. Chill," Tessa tugged on his sleeve and looked up at him from her seat. She glanced at me with a questioning look but I just shrugged.

"Yeah, relax. I'm definitely not listening to him, but I wanted to go shopping anyway, and this is a nice excuse," I held my hands up in defense. I stared into his eyes, trying to communicate with him through facial expressions.
