Chapter 14: After School Special

Mystic Falls, Virginia used to be known as a safe place. The feeling of fear was nonexistent. The only worry anyone ever had was what they were going to wear on the day of their celebration. That is, until the year before, when every citizen was surrounded by danger. It was foreign for them, really. But they became accustomed to it rather quickly. And they became accustomed to the process of death. And, unfortunately, they were now having to become accustomed to the loss of yet another Mayor.

"Carol Lockwood always said that togetherness in times of tragedy leads to healing, that one community is stronger than a thousand of its members. But how does a community stay strong after losing its leader? And Carol was so much more than a leader; she was an open-minded friend and a concerned mother, taken from us too soon by a terrible accident." Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes spoke throughout the speaker to the sea of kids that had been gathered to honor someone who was known to be the leader of their community.

"Screw this." Tyler scoffed before getting up from his seat and leaving the gym, causing his girlfriend to stare after him in a distress of worry.

"Please join me in observing a minute silence in her memory." Sheriff Forbes spoke up once again after a few seconds of silence filled the room due to Tyler's absence.

"I'll be right back." Elena looked over at her friends quickly as she got up from her seat.

"What? Where are you going?" Amalia asked her friend, causing Elena to turn back around.

"I'll just-- I'll be right back." Elena replied once again without an answer. She then turned away from her friends and walked out of the gym, leaving them confused out of their minds.

"I'm assuming that if you're calling me this means you've decided to rejoin civilization?" Amalia answered the call she had gotten from Stefan Salvatore as she leaned her body on the locker, eager to hear what he would have to say. "By the way, good call missing the mandatory assembly."

"I'm having my own mandatory assembly." He replied before taking a pause, which she could only assume was for his own personal benefit of downing yet another glass of bourbon.

"Hm. Does this assembly happen to feature special guest, Jack Daniels?" She asked him rhetorically, listening to the groan that left his mouth as he was caught by her.

"Hilarious." Stefan let out a faint chuckle, contradicting the sarcasm of his tone. "And for why I called you, how would you like to drive the white oak stake right through Rebekah's heart?"
