Chapter 21:
"Well, please take a seat." The man said motioning to a chair in front of his desk. Gerard obediently took a seat and tried his best not to come off too nervous. He glanced down to the name plate set on the edge of the man's desk. Dave Portman. Okay. So he was definitely in the right place.
"So tell me first a little bit about you." The man folded his hands in front of him as he leaned back in his leather chair. Gerard thought for a moment. What was he supposed to say? He didn't even really know himself enough just yet to tell someone else.
"I, uh, I" he stuttered. "I like to draw comics and... yeah, other stuff."
Dave chuckled under his breath. "Well I figured you liked to draw considering that you're applying to be an illustrator... Where are ya' from kid?"
"New Jersey." He said with a bit more confidence.
"Hmm. Very nice. So did you just move to New York?" he asked.
"Uh, yea. Just a few days ago actually." Gerard fidgeted with his fingers. Okay, so the interview wasn't going so bad. Dave seemed nice, but Gerard was so unprepared. He had nothing but drawings with him.
"You like it here so far?"
"Yeah. It's alot different than home, but I like it." Gerard answered.
Dave smiled, and his gaze switched to the bag slung around Gerard's shoulder. "Good to hear. Okay, now I'll need to see your resume and a copy of your high school transcript."
Shit. Gerard should've seen this coming. He'd never had a job before, so he had no resume. And a high school transcript? He didn't even graduate. The rest of his classmates were probably in class right now, and he was there in New York without a home... Maybe all this was a bad idea. He should've let Frank go by himself, and he could've stayed back in Jersey. Back where he could finish school. Back where he had a home. Back where he had a family...
He shook the thoughts away as he remembered Frank. He's the reason he picked up and left home, but Frank was completely worth it. Gerard scolded himself for even thinking that he should've let Frank run from the cops on his own. No, Gerard was happy to be there with Frank, and he was going to try his best to get this job for the both of them.
"Well, Uh, sir, you see..." Gerard hesitated. "I didn't finish highschool, and I've never had a job before. All I have with me is drawings. I'm sorry. I know I'm not very prepared, but maybe you could just look at my draw-"
"Yeah." the man interrupted with a hard face which Gerard couldn't quite read the emotions off of. "Let me see your drawings."
Gerard pulled the bag off of his shoulder and carefully pulled out the three drawings. "Here." he said as he handed him the papers.
Dave frowned at first, but kept staring at each drawing. The room was silent except for the quiet buzz of the air conditioning, and Gerard was getting increasingly nervous. He took his time to examine each drawing, until after what seemed like hours, a smile stretched across his face.
"These are exactly what we've been looking for. I know it's short notice, but could you maybe start tomorrow?"
Gerard couldn't find the words to respond. Did he really just say that he got the job? Like really? Was he being punked? Were his drawings really that good? Now they would be able to afford an apartment, and food, and clothes, and, and... everything was going to be perfect. He couldn't wait to tell Frank, he'd be so happy. Everything was falling into place just like they had imagined. Maybe leaving home had been even better than he could've imagined. Gerard had his dream job, and he had Frank. That was all he needed.
His hands were litally shaking with excitement and relief from his nervousness. "Really?!" Gerard exclaimed with a grin.
"Yeah! We're short handed with illustrators, and these drawings are like nothing I've ever seen before! You got the job, and you start tomorrow!"
Gerard stood up and quickly shook the man's hand. "Thank you, thank you so much, sir."
"Not a problem, We'll be happy to have you on our team of illustrators."
Gerard couldn't believe it. He got the job. His dream job. He couldn't wait to tell Frank.
