It was a quiet night, the only sounds heard inside was the sound of heavy rain hitting the roof and windows. That and the sounds of Balinda Denbrough's screams.
"Patrick, please don't leave me! I need you, please!" she cried out.
Blinking the tears out of her eyes, she watched as the only man she ever loved left the room.
Her neck was aching as her bald head was itching, the only way to scratch it was by rubbing on the pillow-less bed she was strapped to. Her frustration set in and she growled as the night shift nurse made her rounds, shining her torch into her room.
"Shut it, Balinda!" Alyssa the cruel nurse shouted at the starved and hopeless girl.
Alyssa always bothered Balinda. On the first night of Balinda's long stay in Juniper Hills Asylum in 1957 after the flood that took Balinda's baby brother, Alyssa was the first nurse to 'care' for her.. She was nice enough, Balinda was sure the people here would be nice to her, but as soon as she was put in her small, cold room, she lost a tooth; thanks to Alyssa. Since then, every chance given to her, she's tried to hit, bite, claw at Alyssa. She was no longer allowed out of her bed.
She lay there, silently crying, hoping to finally get some sleep. Sleep never came easy in this place unless the nurses came in with their needles.
Balinda heard the familiar groan of the door opening. Turning her head to the side, she saw Patrick walk in.
"I knew you'd come back for me Patrick!" she cried in relief, this time she knew he'd get her out of this disgusting place and she would finally be safe with him, "Patrick, get me out of this bed and we can go far away, we can live in Bangor or Castle Rock like we always dreamed of!"
"Balinda, stop calling me Patrick. Come on, you need to take your medication this time, if you spit it on the floor, Alyssa wont be too happy." Avery, the Juniper Hills night shift Orderly, softly said to Balinda.
He always was rather fond of her; she was one of the only patients that didn't try to attack him when she was having a 'bad' day. The truth is, everyday in this place is a bad day. But Balinda's delusions seemed to be getting worse, which was worrisome as there isn't much that he can do to help her.
He would have spoken to the doctors, begged them even to help her, because the truth is, the doctors didn't care about helping Miss Denbrough and putting in the effort to help her lead a normal life. To them, she was a lost cause. He was worried that speaking up and bothering them would lead to him losing his job. The only reason he even got this job in the first place was because his sister, Alyssa, put in a good word.
He started his job on thin ice.
After calming her down, and doing his nightly task, which in this case was escorting Balinda to the medic wing for her medication, he took her back to her room and put her to bed.
"Please, Patrick, don't strap me in.." Balinda pleaded hopelessly, eyes tired and weak.
"I wont, Balinda. Get in bed so I can tuck you in," he continued the constant cycle. She always fell for it, every night to get her to lay back down in bed without a struggle, he'd just tell her that he'll tuck her in, then as soon as shes laying in her bed, he will strap her in to prevent her from doing any harm while she is unattended.
"Goodnight, Balinda. Get some rest," and with those sweet words, her favorite orderly left her alone.
"Goodnight, Patrick. Let the gang know that I love them!" Balinda called out to who she thought was Patrick.
She rested her sore head back down on the rough, itchy and hard bed, and closed her eyes. When Balinda closed her eyes, she found she was never alone. She was surrounded by her amazing friends that would never leave her side. She was no longer Balinda Denbrough, but rather Blayde Tozier.
Blayde Tozier had a good life - a better life. A life where she wasn't wracked with guilt for not saving her baby brother from the monster in the drain, a life where the awful things were happening to those who deserved it, like nurse Alyssa. A life where her family wasn't shattered and a life where she didnt have to think of the awful things she'd seen.
There, in a world she'd perfected as Blayde Tozier, she'd never carried the burden of clutching Georgie's lifeless body to her chest as the screams of Dave Gardner rung in her ears, wishing she had been watching him better and didn't let him run off without her during the storm.
Balinda wasn't "crazy" nor was she a "lunatic", as many people in Derry often gossiped. She simply couldn't cope with the things she had seen and witnessed. Most people, in fact, wouldn't be able to.
While she sat there, all those years ago, with her dead brothers head on her lap, blood pumping out of the stump where his arm should have been, she felt something break inside her. Maybe it was her heart.
Between the horrified screams of Mr. Gardner, she had heard a spine tingling laugh. It was a predatory sound masked by the facade of happiness and childhood innocence. She'd spend the remains of her life wishing she never peered into the darkness of the storm drain that was filling with her brothers blood.
Because God only knew, the darkness stared back, with bright yellow eyes. The devils eyes.
