"Hey! I'm Tori and this is my cousin Jake," the blonde haired freckled girl said pointing to her curly brown haired cousin.
"What grade are you guys in?" I asked, anxiously.
"Seventh. What about you," Tori replied.
"I am too! What we do is wait for the
old man to stop talking, ring the bell, say the pledge, and you two can just follow me to the classroom," I said, smiling.
"Okay!" Tori said.
I could tell that she was a little weirded out by my unexpected confidence but that's totally fine with me because I had a good feeling about this girl being a possible friend. Her cousin wasn't half bad either. He had curly brown hair, greenish/brown eyes and a very innocent looking face. Tori on the other hand has a ton of freckles, dirty blonde hair, and a smile that stretches from across both sides of her face. I could already tell that all the guys would want her.
They followed me on to the grass field and we leaned against the yellow painted walls until Dr. Cash started speaking.
"Hello hello everyone, I'm so glad to see that everyone is here bright and early as this is Explore Charter Schools' first year open. I'd like to thank our staff for making this school possible. Now I published a book long ago about making good choices-"
....and that is where I stopped listening.
After he was done giving his speech on whatever, Tori and Jake followed me into the first buildings side door (also painted yellow) and around the cheap gray dividers set up to separate classrooms since this hellhole couldn't afford actual walls. I walked past the elementary half of the building and into the first classroom to the right where they joined me along with three other girls that were already sitting there. Tracy, Stephanie, and Brittany.
Tracy was a sixth grader who spent her free time listening to Jason Aldean and riding horses that she was allergic to. Stephanie was in 8th grade and was the only black girl in the whole school with dreads. Brittany was a shy curly haired Filipino girl with purple rimmed glasses and a slight overbite. We were a very dysfunctional group.
I remember Tori and I laughing and telling funny jokes with the group while jake sat with the remaining six guys at the table across from us. Tori and I became really quick friends. We shared secrets and hung out at her house and had sleepovers, you know typical seventh grade stuff.
Our teacher, Mr. V, walked crookedly into the room with an awkward smile and the IQ of my pinky toe. He had this weird speech impediment that made him make an unusual shushing sound after almost every sentence. He walked around like a pro wrestler with the gut of Santa clause. He had slim eyes and black hair that looked like a toupee.
We survived out first few classes until lunch where we sat outside since we didn't have a cafeteria and basically had recess. Tori and Jake sat next to me under a tree to the right of the grass field and we talked and told great stories from childhood.
Weeks went on about the same and I was actually starting to tolerate this hellhole of a school. I had also started to develop feelings for Jake. He was super smart and athletic and the greatest sense of humor. I was texting Tori one night and decided to tell her.
Me: hey Tori I need to ask you something
Tori: yeah what's up?
Me: do you think Jake likes me?
Tori: why do u like him?!!!!??!
Me: well yeah kind of
Tori: well omgeeeee he likes you too!!!!
I was beyond happy and excited since this doesn't really happen to me. I always thought that because I used to have glasses and dorky bangs that no one would but since sixth grade I got contacts, side bangs, and dyed my hair dark brown I've had a new hop in my step. This just topped the cake and I couldn't wait to go to school the next day.
