The girls stayed 'till late on Monday, lost into planning my first time outside the white fence, after seven o'clock. And me being me, I wrote everything down that we wanted to do.
My mind goes crazy over the possibilities I have with finally turning eighteen. I climb into my car, driving down the road and letting my mind wander to places I usually avoid. Just as I'm about to turn a corner my phone starts ringing. I pick it up and put it on speaker, while it sits between my tights.
''I heard you're throwing a party,'' a familiar voice trails of making me smile.
''If you believe that, we can't be friends anymore.''
I hear him groan dramatically. ''Wait does that mean I only get to see you on family meet ups? I am so crushed you wouldn't even believe.''
''What do you want, Finnick?'' I ask him as I stop in front of the little cafe. I usually come here to just write or read. It's an hour from my house and the only getaway I have besides my room.
''First do not call me that. And second I wanted to ask who-'' he asks, but I cut him off.
''Wait a second, Finnick'' I say and hang up. Getting inside the cafe I see him behind the counter placing the phone in his back pocket.
He comes around the counter hugging me. ''It's rude to just hang up,'' he scolds me shaking his head.
''Sorry, but I figured it won't make much sense talking to you over the phone while standing right next to you?" I smile widely. "Except if we were in a bad chick-flick movie, where the rich sisters talk over the phone while walking next to each other.''
He laughs walking to a table, me following him. Finn works in a bar/cafe type thing on days when he does not have to be in college. Sure it would've made more sense if he'd work a place near CSU, but this is the only way we can see each other.
''So tell me about the rumor you've heard.'' he says looking me directly in the eye. I don't know why I suddenly get nervous. Part of me wants this so bad, but another part -a probably bigger one- wants me to stay in the safety of my house.
''Emma told me she's throwing a birthday party for you?''
I whip my chair. ''Well it's kind of true, but it won't be a party. Just a nice get together with you, Emma and Heather. I've got everything planned out.''
Finn smiles. ''Of course you do. So I'm invited?''
''If you want to come. Only us girls, won't it get boring for you?''
He nods thinking about his answer, while I take my time admiring him. Finn is a friend of my family for years now. He was born in Pullman just like I was. After we moved we lost contact, but when he came here to go to CSU we managed to get in touch again. And I would be lying if I say he isn't attractive. Piercing blue eyes and black hair as dark as the night.
''I'll think about it. This is probably my only chance to see you drink alcohol?'' He laughs and I swat his arm. ''Anyway I have to get back to work, can I bring you anything? My shift ends in an hour do you mind waiting?''
''I have to get a few things, I'll come back at,'' I glance at the watch on my arm. ''I will come back at five then?''
He nods going back behind the counter, as I walk outside and onto the streets. Finding the nearest park, I start walking towards the trees and sitting down, the branches and leafs shielding me from the burning sun.
I know I lied, but I wanted to have some time for myself. I still have to talk to my mother and Bob about my plans for CSU or another college if I get into any. I know they probably expect me to go to an college, but we never talk about it and I hate arguing with my mum.
The reason why she won't let me out after seven o'clock comes from events that happened a few years ago making it able for me to understand where everything is coming from. But this is my life, my decisions. I will never be younger then I am right now.
Sighing, I turn my head watching kids run around on the playground, chasing each other. Two boys and a girl laughing, when the girl falls to the floor. I watch as the boy, who has the same brown hair helps her up. Her brother. My heart beats faster as he holds her hands as he leads her to his mother, while she cries. The he kisses her on the cheek and continues to play with his friend.
After a while of just watching, I reach into my bag, pulling out my planner and writing down the things I still have to do when I get home.
It seems like hours have passed when I walk back to the small bar.
''Ready?'' Finn asks, and I nod. He climbs into the car with me and I drive home.
After a while of just listening to music, he speaks up. ''What I don't get is.. .’’
''Hmh''
''How did your mum agree on that?''
I gulp heavily. ''Uuh.'' there was no use in lying to Finn. ''Only Bob knows.''
He does not say anything for a while, probably doubting my words. I'm not the kind of girl who lies a lot. I hate lying with a burning passion; I hate the feeling on my chest which leaves me breathless. I want to be able to breathe freely.
''This is where I need your help.''
