~Katie~

I lazily floated on my surfboard, trailing my tanned but now pruned fingers along the water. I flipped onto my back and narrowed my eyes at the glaring sun. And this is when I really wish I had my sunnies on, a cold drink in my hand, preferably a cute guy next to me...

"HEY TRISTRAM, BET YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" A loud voice yelled from up the cliff. I quickly shot up, sitting on my board and putting a hand over my eyes to see what the hell was going on up there. There were at least three guys and...no wait, four guys and a girl, who were all standing at the edge of the cliff.

"HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU'LL FLAMING DIE" I yelled up, putting my hands over my mouth to hopefully make it louder. I did not want to witness five live deaths in front of me; it'll put me off surfing forever.

"Nah, we've done this heaps of times" The girl shrugged, grinning down at me, even from down here, I could see her brown eyes sparkling with freedom and mischief.

"Well don't come crying to me if you break your legs" I said, crossing my arms and narrowing my eyes at them. The response? A loud round of laughter. Sighing, but unable to contain my smile, I slowly paddling backwards to they wouldn't land on me and squash me.

"THREE...TWO...ONE...GO!" They all yelled and with increasing speed, they jumped in, screaming in pure delight. I waited for them to pop up...and started to naturally freak out when they didn't.

"Umm guys?" I said, leaning forward a little. I felt a little push on my back and screamed as I fell into the cool water, my surfboard flipping over and drifting slowly away. I swam back to the surface, giggling as I met the laughing faces.

"Your...face..." One of the guys gasped, laughing his head off.

"Yes, hilarious" I snorted, swimming to my surfboard and grabbing it. I felt a little tug on my hair and turned back, raising an eyebrow.

"And why are you tugging on my hair?" I asked the boy, who shrugged and dropped it.

"I thought you had seaweed in your hair...but it was just your hair" He said, scrunching up his nose.

"My hair does not look like seaweed" I huffed, touching it self-consciously.

"He knows nothing, he's a sure idiot," the girl laughed loudly, ruffling his wet hair, making it stick up. He rolled his eyes, with a smile playing on his face. Already, I could some up that these guys were close, and had been through good...and hard times together.

"So, where do you guys live? Around here?" I asked hopefully, the more people I knew before school started again, the better. Maybe if we attended the same school I wouldn't have to surf every night to get away from school, the drama, the 'friends', home.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that" The girl said slowly, almost cautiously. I looked at them carefully for a moment, noticing there was a slight tremor of tension in the air.

"It's weird, we've been talking to an utter stranger for 5 minutes and yet, we still don't know her name, so what is your name?" One of the boys with blonde hair asked, floating on his back and fixing a stare at me. I shifted on my board, a little uncomfortable with the intense stare.

"Katie" I answered shortly, mimicking the boy and flipping onto my back. "And you guys?"

"Dylan"

"Sam...and I'm single," the auburn haired guy said, winking teasingly in my direction. I felt my whole face flame up but tried to down play it by splashing some water in his direction.

"And forever single" I retorted with another splash.

"She got you there" The girl laughed, high fiving me.

"I'm Matt"

"Tristram"

"Wazzup, Katie, I'm Clarence" The girl...I mean Clarence yelled, grinning madly.

"I mean, the sky is up"

"I said wazzup, not wassup. Wazzup is like...wazzup. Whilst wassup is what's up" She mock scolded, causing me to roll my eyes teasingly.

"I'm so sorry miss, will you explain that again? I want to get an A for my test we're apparently taking..." I trailed off, blinking my eyes innocently.

"Sure, so to put it simply, as maths teachers would say, ax + ay + az = a(x + y+z)" She said seriously, a firm look on her face. Forcing myself to contain my laughter that was bubbling, I nodded and wrote in the air as seriously as I could.

"So technically, finding x is only useful when you're a pirate"

"Definitely. Also, algebra has to stop trying to find x. She's not coming back" Dylan sighed dramatically, causing me to snort ever-so attractively.

"Hey, you guys, what's the time." I piped up, breaking the short lapse of silence.

"Time to get a watch" They all chorused, splashing me in the face. Spluttering, I splashed them back. "Hilarious. But seriously though, I need to be back earlier to make dinner"

"It's...4:00pm" Matt said, offering me with watch. I checked it briefly, hoping that it was actually 3:00pm... and sighed, seeing as it really was 4:00pm.

"Alright, better get going then. See you...tomorrow?"

"Sure, same time, same place"

"And wear that wet suit, it shows off your figure pretty nicely" Sam added, winking at me.

"Shut up, Sam" they all yelled at him, dunking him into the water before I could tell him off myself. I laughed as I paddled back to shore, catching one last wave before running onto the sand to take off my wet suit. I peeled it off, and quickly changed into my shorts and top.

"HEY, KAT, HURRY OR I WON'T DRIVE YOU HOME" Adam's voice yelled from the car park. I quickly glanced back at the ocean, where they were all still fooling around with each other and laughing. Smiling, I ran back inside the car, happy to see that maybe, just maybe, this vacation won't be as...dramatic as last summer.

"What are you smiling about, Kat?" Adam asked, looking amused.

"Made some crazily weird friends" I explained, drying my hair with a spare towel.

"Even weirder then you? Weird..." I smacked his face and he laughed as he easily deflected it, tossing the towel into the backseat.

"I'm not weird. At least I'm not the one who calls their car their stunning silver baby" I mimicked, trying to copy Adam's voice.

"Need a cough drop? Cause it sure sounds like you need one" He smirked, offering a mint lolly in his hand. I rolled my eyes as I popped it into my mouth, grinning like mad.
