Opal stood up in fright, watching as a man appeared from the woods. He held a rifle, and Opal could see sweat stains all over, the hot sun getting to him.
"Hi my name is Otis," he greeted once more, "Do you want to come back to my farm? Your girl can come with," he told.
Surprise came onto Opal's features, how could somebody welcome another person so easy, especially in this world, where you couldn't trust anybody.
"It's safe, away from everything and anything."
Opal thought for a second, could this place actually be safe? She didn't know whether to stay in the woods, where anything could attack, or to his farm where Sophia could be safe, yet they could never find the group again.
She looked down to Sophia, seeing her pleading eyes. It was clear that she wanted to stay where they were, so that she could reunite with her mother again.
"Sophia, I think it would be best to go to their farm," Opal told.
"But what about my mom?" Sophia argued, her voice a little too high for being in the middle of the woods.
"Look, we can leave a note in the dirt to tell the group where we are," Opal reasoned.
Sophia looked down, nodding her head slightly. Opal could tell that she didn't want to go, yet she knew that it would be best for her and the group.
"Oh, uh, by the way, the farm's name is Greene, so that your group can find it if they cross over this area," Otis explained.
Opal nodded as Sophia started to sketch the note in the dirt. Opal started to think about what the group was happening, did Rick find his way back to the highway? Who was watching Quinn? Could Daryl be mad that Opal ran into the woods? She knew that wondering all these things weren't going to help her at all.
"I guess we'll come with you," Opal spoke, Sophia finishing up with the note.
"Okay, I'm ready," Sophia announced, standing next to Opal and grabbing her hand.
Otis nodded, "Alright, let's get goin'."
Opal nodded as Otis started to lead the way to wherever his farm was.
They walked for what seemed like a half an hour, nobody spoke and Sophia continued to hold Opal's hand.
"How much farther until we get there?" Opal asked, making everyone stop walking.
Otis looked up at the sky, as if it would tell him something, "Maybe, another twenty minutes?"
Opal sighed, her legs sore, she slowly ran a hand over her face. She just wanted to be at the highway, looking through cars with Quinn.
In the middle of her thoughts, a scream broke out, and it came from right beside her.
She looked at Sophia, watching as a walker bit down on her next, blood spurting everywhere.
"Oh my god!" Otis exclaimed, his hand flying straight to his mouth.
Opal quickly shot the walker, Sophia's grip on her hand deathly.
Sophia fell to the ground, part of her shoulder missing.
Opal's heart started to beat faster than it had ever before. Faster than how it was at the CDC earlier that week. "Oh my god, Sophia, no, no," She kept repeating no continuously, tears quickly entering her eyes and falling out as soon as they came.
"Am I going to die?" Sophia asked, tears streaming down her face. She was as terrified as Opal, probably more.
Opal didn't reply, she didn't know how to. HOw was she supposed to tell a child that she was going to die? Was she going to have to put the child out of her misery?
Most of Sophia's bright, and happy rainbow t-shirt was now stained a dark red, mixing in with the dirt that had collected on it.
"We have to get her to the farm! Maybe we can save her!" Opal exclaimed, glancing at Otis, who had a scared look on his face, his hand still on top of his mouth.
"She's bit! She won't be able to survive!" he exclaimed.
"Well we can't leave her to die!"
"We're going to have to put her down," Otis said.
Opal gasped, she definitely did not have the guts to end Sophia's misery, yet she knew that Otis shouldn't have to do it. That shouldn't be on his mind. That he had to kill a child.
The woman ran another hand over her face, then reaching down to her knife, she looked to Sophia, her eyes shut.
"Sophia?" Opal said, crouching down to get closer to the child.
Sophia didn't move an inch.
"No," Opal said, one of her tears landing onto Sophia's clean cheek.
Opal knew that she couldn't let Sophia turn into one of the monsters that everyone dreaded. She took her shaking hand, the knife clenched tightly, and slid the knife into the child's head.
Opal held back a loud sob when she heard the crunch of the knife into her skull.
"We've," Otis started, reaching his hand out to Opal to make sure that she was mentally stable and alright, besides the fact that somebody that she could have possibly been close to just died. "We've got to get to the farm, Opal."
Opal nodded, and stood. She threw her knife down on to the dirt, she couldn't use it ever again. Not knowing what it had been used for.
"Let's-" Opal had trouble speaking, still holding back the millions of sobs that were rising in the back of her throat, "Let's go."
Otis nodded, and started to guide the younger woman to the Greene Family Farm.
Once they had approached the long field of where crops would have been, Opal's face had dried, yet if you looked close enough you could see the tear stains that she had yet to wipe off.
When they got to the farm house, there was a young woman standing on the porch, she looked to be a little bit older than Opal though. She had short brown hair, in the style of a bob. The least that could be said about her in Opal's opinion was that she was beautiful. Yet she was quite more than just beautiful.
"Otis, who is this?" the girl asked as another man walked out of the house, a clean, white rag in his hands.
"This is Opal, found her and a little girl in the middle of the woods." Otis explained.
Opal could feel more tears building up as he mentioned Sophia.
A look of confusion entered the older man and young woman, who Opal had assumed was his daughter, as they looked at Opal's face and saw her sadness, and no little girl as Otis had mentioned there was.
"Where's the girl?" the older man questioned, his hands on his hips.
"She uh," Otis stopped, his sights on Opal, just to see if she was having a break down or not, "she was bit on the way here. She died from blood loss. Couldn't bring her back to the farm in time Hershel."
Otis seemed to be broken up about the loss of the little girl. Even though he had only known her for merely a half hour.
"Oh my," the woman muttered under her breath, her hand on top of her mouth.
Opal stared at the ground, traumatized by the events that had occurred earlier.
