Jesse's PoV

I didn't want to tell Axel. How much pain I was in. It was a mixture of a headache and the static of electricity. And it was so painful, I sometimes couldn't concentrate. And it all started because of that storm.

The night of the storm.

I woke up, feeling strange. That weird feeling of something big happening. Reuben was still sleeping beside me, his fur soft and waving a little from the cold breeze that was coming in through my window. My parents were arguing again, their voices raised and I rolled my eyes. I got out of bed, since I couldn't sleep and wondered if I should get to the treehouse instead. Overhead, thunder roared and the winds blew so hard around the house, I shivered, even in my long sleeved shirt. However, just as I stepped out of my room-

A huge burst of thunder shook the house and at the same time, my father barged out the room and he tripped, knocking me onto the floor. "WATCH WHERE YOURE GOING!" he yelled, louder than the storm. I was a little terrified but knew not to show it. I looked up at him and the last thing I saw before I had this headache was his furious anger and a flash of lightning.

After that, my mom told me that my father had knocked me out, and I had to go to the hospital because he had hit me against the corner of a table and my head started to bleed. Which explained why I had a headache. But I thought it was all a headache.

I had almost died, because after the doctors fixed me, they said I had been struck by lightning as the roof of my house caved in. Reuben made it out safely but my father had died by a falling beam, which somehow made me feel like karma had something to do with it.

"You should've died, Jesse." one of the doctors said, when I came to.

I didn't know how or what happened, but all that mattered was that Reuben and I were safe.
