~CORA'S POV:~
Nick and I stood outside of Demi's hospital room discussing what was going to happen next since her sanity was flickering on and off once again. I'm not kidding when I say it's literally flickering, the moment Demi finished elbowing Nick in the neck - she was sane again, two seconds later the insane part of her was back.
"We're going to fully sedate her for the C-section, we were going to go with this plan anyways since the baby is already in distress. Once Demi wakes up we'll be able to give her the medication that she needs so her sanity can stay in one place." One of the Doctors spoke, "Is your neck alright?" His eyes trailed over to Nick's hand that was rubbing the end of it.
Nick nodded, "It's fine, Demi wasn't really able to get me that well as she intended to."
"Alright. Nick, you can either come into the room for the C-section or wait out down in the lobby, which do you prefer?"
Nick looked over at me then back towards the Doctor, "Cora and I can wait in the lobby."
-
We sat down in the tiny lobby that the prison medical facility had, it was one a.m and we were the only people sitting out here. It was extremely quiet, except for the sound of Nick's leg shaking down by the chair next to me.
"Hey..." I said gently, "Everything is going to be fine, the baby is going to be okay and Demi will pull through. Try your best to relax."
"This past year we've been through so much shit." He replied, "I'm starting to think that I don't have the fight left in me if something else decided to go downhill at this point. When we came to visit Demi yesterday, I was expecting to walk in and be completely pissed off at her but when we came face to face and I could see that she was back with her soft brown eyes and wide smile... I just couldn't. Her insanity enjoys messing with us and now I'm not sure how to feel.""I haven't been so sure how to feel about Demi either since I almost ran her over with a car, and the sane part of her came back to the surface."
"Wait, what?""Oh yeah..." I mumbled, "You were sort of um, bleeding out in the front seat when that happened. Maia wanted me to run her over with the car, but then the real Demi came back then she vanished again. I honestly just wanted to run up and hug her once I saw that she was sane, I think you're right about the other part of Demi messing with us. It's almost like it knows what it's doing."
"You know," Nick sighed, "I really thought prison would be alright for her but now that I think about it... it isn't fair to the sane part of Demi. If I could cut the deranged part out of her and throw it into a cell, I would."
I nodded my head slowly as I raised my brows, "Demi tried fighting it you know, she's always tried."
Nick leaned over and set his forehead into the palm of his hands, "I wish we would've done something sooner."
"What could we have done?" I blurted, "The insane part of her completely took over and mastered how to pretend to be sane as well as she could to get by with everything, if you look back at it we honestly would have never been able to tell which part of her we would be talking to. When Demi hired Detective Wilson to look into Riley's fingerprints, which part of her was that? Deranged? Sane? When Demi watched Mia light Joe on fire, she obviously wasn't sane then since Demi admitted earlier to thinking that this baby was Joe's - she didn't even know he was dead." I ranted, "That thing has been playing us the entire fucking time and we never knew and that scares me Nick, it really does. It's why I'm still so hesitant to talk to her, I feel like all of my memories with Demi has been a lie."
"It's not her fault Cora."
"I know that," I admitted, "But I can't help how I feel and you're practically feeling the same way."
Nick sighed as he lifted his head up from the palm of his hands, just as he was about to speak once again one of the nurses in white scrubs came walking towards us. Nick jumped to his feet immediately, "Is the baby okay?"
"The delivery went very smoothly since the baby is pretty premature our facility won't be able to handle his condition here-"
"What condition?" Nick interrupted, and I couldn't blame him at this point.
"Apnea, it's very common in premature babies. It's a pause in breathing for at least twenty seconds or more. We want to be able to get him to a NICU as soon as possible, we're already working on transferring him over to the children's hospital." The nurse explained, "They're getting him into the ambulance now."
"What about Demi?" I asked, "Is everything okay with her?"
"She should be waking up very soon, but we need Mr. Jonas to make his way over to follow the ambulance right now."
Nick pulled out his car keys from his pocket as the nurse turned around to lead him out, "Of course. Let's go, Cora, grab your stuff."
I stood up slowly from my seat and paused, "Wait... Nick." The nurse and Nick both stopped in their tracks to turn around to face me, "Yeah? What's wrong?"
"You go." I breathed, "I'll stay here with Demi for when she wakes up, I don't want her to wake up to an empty room."
