"Luke?" I called out, waiting for a response. None came.
"Luuuke?!" I said again, louder this time. Still, nothing.
I pursed my lips at the silence and looked around the dark street. Twenty minutes ago, Luke told me he was going to go buy a bottle of water from the corner store a couple of yards back, and that it would only take a minute. I wondered where he could be, but I knew that I shouldn't move from where he'd left me. I told him I would stay where I was. If I move, and he comes back to see I'm not there, then how would I ever know why he had taken so long to buy his water? How would I know for sure that he had come back to make sure I was still here and walk me home?
I paced back and forth, humming to keep myself company. A few more minutes passed and I was getting scared. At first, I was only worried about where Luke might be, but now, what if something happened to him?
"Luke!!" I tried screaming his name once more, but again, I heard no answer.
I looked down at my cell phone to see if he had texted me, but there was no signal.
I tapped on the side of the cell, wondering what I should do.
That's when I heard footsteps, felt strong arms tighten around my waist, and a hand cover my mouth.
