*Phoenix's POV*

"Mom, I don't know what to do. I was so sure that Luke felt the same way but..."

My mom held me close to her and stroked my hair. "Boys are confusing, honey. Trust me, your dad was enough proof." She sighed. "He's your best friend, Phoenix. He loves you, and he always will. He might not love you the way you want him to, but you can't always get what you want, can you?"

I nodded and wiped my nose with the back of my hand.

She hands me a tissue and kisses my forehead. "Give him time to come around and see how you're doing. He might be a little shook up or confused." I shivered at the thought if him apologizing to me again about everything that happened. (I haven't told my mom about that yet.) "Or," my mom continued. "You could be the one to apologize." I looked up at her, startled. My mom chuckled. "Honey, you're the one that's confusing him."

"But that's not fair," I interject.

She chuckles. "Life isn't fair."

I purse my lips and sigh, defeated. "I think I need some sleep first."

She laughs again. "Of course, sweetie." She stands up and lends me her hand. I turn towards the staircase and see Johnny standing there, his eyes opened wide, poised with his jaw to the floor. "You like Luke?"

I open my mouth to explain, but all that comes out is "Ah, uh, ka..."

My mom squeezes my shoulders as if telling me to shut up. "Johnny, I told you to go to your room."

"But I was hungry!!"

"That's no excuse."

"Actually," I speak up. "It is..."

"Not now, Phoenix. Johnny, go to your room now or your grounded."

He huffs and crosses his arms, not moving. "Fine," my mom shrugged. "You're grounded."

"That's not fair!!" My brother stomps his foot to the ground, making me flinch.

"Johnny," the queen warns.

He rolls his eyes and says, "I wanna know what's wrong with Nixxi." I flinched at the nickname. My mom moaned loudly at Johnny's persistency and let go of my shoulders, crossing her arms to glare at the devil.

"That is none of your business." She spoke each word loudly and I swear I could see the spit foaming in her mouth. I stepped back, not wanting to get caught up in the drama. I had too much of my own already.

My mom and Johnny continued their staring contest while I thought about how much I really needed some sleep. "Guys..." I said. "Guys." Louder this time. "GUYS!!"

They stopped bickering and turned towards me. I sighed. "Mom, thank you for your advice. Johnny, yes. I like Luke. But he doesn't like me, so you don't have to worry about it. Please move aside so I can get some sleep." They stared at me and my sudden calmness, then moved aside so I could get through. I turned before stepping on the final step. "And Mom, Johnny doesn't need to be grounded. He just wanted an answer..." I turned back around and headed towards my bedroom.

"You're still grounded," I heard my mom say.
