I wake again, this time by someone shaking me. My eyes pop open in fright, but I remember that I'm safe when I see Luke's face gazing down at me. "I should probably get you back home," he tells me. I nod. "Yeah."
He helps me up, them walks towards the door so I can have some privacy while I change. His hand reaches the doorknob, but before he opens it, he turns back towards me. "I'm really glad you're okay." Then, his hand twists the doorknob and he's out of the room before I can reply.
I stare at the place where he was standing, my head spinning. I wondered what he meant by that. Of course, he could've said it because we're best friends- we have been for as long as we can both remember. But there's always that hopefulness that he meant something more.
I blinked, realizing that I still hadn't gotten out of bed, and pulled the covers off of my legs. If he doesn't say anything more on the way home, then I'll tell my self he meant it as friends. If he does say something, well, I don't know what I'll think.
I shook my head and decided to try not to think about it, but as I pulled off my t-shirt, I felt a pang coming from my chest. I wanted him to mean something more. I've wanted that for a long time. But he's never done anything. Is it just because he's too shy to say it? Too scared that I don't feel the same way? Too-
A knock in the door interrupted my thoughts. I jumped, still only in my bra and shorts. "Phoenix, you okay?"
I purse my lips and sigh. "Yeah, Luke. Almost ready."
I wait until I hear footsteps walking away before I pull off my shorts and put in new clothes, including my old, beat-up sneakers.
I breathed in slowly before I opened the door and walked towards the kitchen, where Luke was sitting.
I sauntered towards the table and moved towards the chair across from Luke. He jumped, not realizing that I was already out of the room. Finally recovering himself, he stood up and pulled the chair across from him away from the table, allowing me to sit. He then asked, "You want some breakfast?" I nodded numbly. He smiled kindly and faced the stovetop, cracking an egg over a pan.
I stared at the side of his profile, and I could only think of one thing: I really hope he meant something more.
