I marched home in a puddle of tears, wondering what I'll do when I get back home. If my family sees me in tears, they'll freak. They'll wonder what happened- will I tell them?
Truth is, I don't want to see them. I need to be alone, yet at the same time, I need someone to hold me.
I don't understand; only a few minutes ago, I would have wanted Luke to be the one to hold me against him, but now, he's the last person I want to see.
I arrive at my driveway, cold and shaking. I walk towards the front door, holding myself together. It was if I was keeping my body from falling apart.
I open the unlocked door and move towards the stairs to my bedroom. My mom comes out from the kitchen with a pan and a towel in her hand. She sees me, and her eyes fill with fear. "Phoenix? Baby, are you alright?"
She drops the pan and towel on the coffee table and runs to me. I throw my arms around her waist and hug her tightly, sobbing. She stories my hair calmly. "Shh, shh. It's going to be alright," she said against my head.
I hear a clanking and see my younger brother come out of the kitchen. "Phoenix?"
He stops when he sees my face. "What happened to you?" My mom turns her head and whispers, "Go to your bedroom and stay there, Johnny."
"But Moooom," he insisted.
"Now."
He pursed his lips and turned towards the stairs.
Once he was finally gone, my mom took my arms, led me to the couch, and sat down next to me. "Tell me everything."
