One Year Later

I laughed as Luke told the old story about how the hardest thing about getting ready in the morning is getting his hair to stand upright. I shook my head and patted his hair. "Hey, don't mess it up!!" he said. I laughed. "Hair game strong, Luke." He chuckled.

He looked behind his shoulder and nodded to the man behind the register. I pulled a face. "What was that about?" I asked. He smiled and kissed my lips. "You'll see."

Luke got up and headed towards the back of the coffee shop, next to where some teenage kids with a guitar and a rough voice come to play. He picked up a guitar that was sitting there and adjusted the microphone stand. I sipped my coffee cautiously.

Once Luke finally got the mic where he wanted it to be, he said, "Hey everyone. Uh, my name is Luke. I have a special song that I want to play to my best friend and the most amazing girlfriend I've ever had." I gulped. I think that's me. He smiles at me, and I smile back.

He clears his throat and starts strumming. He sings a few lines, and my eyes light up. Sure, I knew Luke played the guitar and sang a few songs here and then, but I didn't know he was that good.

"We'll never be as young as we are now

It's time to leave this old black & white town

Let's seize the day, let's run away

Don't let the colours fade to grey

We'll never be as young as we are now

As young as we are now"

I don't notice at first, but I'm crying. I'm so grateful for all the good things in my life, but Luke is definitely at the top of the list.

I hum along to his voice and never stop smiling while he plays. I sip my coffee and enjoy the serenade as if it's the last thing I'll ever do. And when he's done, I mouth "I love you."
