James POV:
Were all in the house about to hold the memorial that Riley came up with.
'Okay. Who wants to go first?' Riley asks.
No one speaks.
'I guess I will' Alfie says akwardly.
Everyone focuses on him.
'Well um...I didnt really know Deboradh that well. In fact I didnt know her at all. But what I do know is that she favoured James over Kevin. At least thats what I heard'
We laugh.
'Another thing that I also heard about her was that she was the most caring person ever and she didnt care about herself one bit. She put everyone before her. And I have to say, that does explain where James got his charm from to use it on Riley!'
I smile and wrap my arm around her. She rests her head on my shoulder.
'I also have to say that Im glad that I got to know her children. One gave me a place to live and the other...well you know...hes one of thoes people who are just there and end up annoying the crap out of you. Am I right?'
'Oh yes!' I shout out.
They laugh.
'Ive known her for so little time, yet it feels like Ive known her my whole life. She was always so cheerful to everyone she met and always had a smile on her face. And that is something that I will always remember about her'
Everyone nods.
'Whos next?' Riley asks.
Everyone takes their turn talking about how special she was and how close she will always be to their heart.
Then it's Riley's turn.
'Well...what can I possibly say about her? She was a second mother to me. The sweetest person Ive ever met. She was always so passionate about everything she did. Totally invested in her kids future and making sure they would grow up having a happy life. If theres one thing for sure, its that she knew how to raise her kids with high standards. She brought them up well. Made them fine respectable young men, and I have to say, she did a pretty amazing job at it. I'm very grateful that I had her in my life for the little time that I knew her. She was very proud and took pride in what she did. Her protective instinct over her children was so amazing and knowing that her two sons were happy was all she ever wanted. Deborah was such an amazing person. I know that I will miss her so much. But the memories of her will stay deep within me. That's a promise'
I smile at her.
'James...your next' she says.
I take a breath in.
'You don't have to do it if it's too hard' she says.
I look at her sadly.
'I can do It's
She nods and holds my hand.
'She...um...she was the most amazing mother I could have asked for. She meant the world to me. She's been there for me through everything. The good, bad and ugly. If it wasn't for her support and kindness throughout my life, I honestly wouldn't have been able to manage. When dad died, we were all so broken. But who stood tall and strong everyday making sure we got to school, did our homework and kept going in life? Her. And half the time I never even asked her if she was okay. But I could tell she was hurt. One day I walked in on her crying in her bedroom. She said that she misses him. But as long as she had us...She knew she's be okay and that hed always be with us. That's when I knew she was a fighter and nothing was ever going to stop her. She fought so hard through her sickness. She was so brave. Everything she ever did in her life was from the bottom of her heart. And because of the love she had for everyone, I know she'll always be here. And I will never forget her. I love her. I always will'
I look at Riley as she smiles softly at me.
'Okay...is that everyone?'
They all nod.
'Right then. Grab your lanterns and we'll take them to the grave'
We all pick up our lanterns and make our way to the grave.
We stand at her headstone and light them.
'Well mom...this is for you. We all love you and miss you' I say as we let them go and watch them float off into the distance.
Riley wraps her arms around me.
I'm glad we did this. It really helped. I'm really going to miss her.
But I know she'll always be her with me.
Forever more.
