Fury was dead.
After the gunshots, everything was a blur. I remember running after Steve as he chased a man in a mask. My left shoulder was bruised black from slamming into walls.
But I didn't feel the pain because the pain inside was all I could feel. A hollow sensation, like I didn't have anything inside me anymore.Fury was dead.
The words on the paper he'd left me kept echoing in my head, revolving over and over.
You must do anything to make them believe you are on their side.
Anything.I was scared what anything meant. Because I knew anything would mean killing. And that was something I told myself I wouldn't do again. And if SHIELD was compromised, I couldn't trust anyone but the people on that list.
And the list was incredibly small.SHIELD was compromised, and I had my theories about who had compromised us. I knew my history. I'd read up on HYDRA the second I'd been named Agent Walsh. They had people on the inside. So who knew who was on our side.
After we had said goodbye to Fury, his cold dead body looking nothing like the great man he had been, I put on my suit. It was more or less the same one I'd worn in New York, just, better. It was bullet proof, fireproof, and had plenty of space to store cigarette packets. I still work a mask, and a hood, and now my secret had died with Fury. There was nothing for me to worry about.
Except, of course, the fact that SHEILD had been infiltrated and it's director was dead.
But don't worry Keight, the secret of your identity won't be found out. Because that's the most important thing going on right now.I sassed myself as I walked the hallways of the SHEILD HQ with Steve at my side. He wasn't smiling like he would normally when we walked together. Instead, he was stoic, his broad shoulders ramrod straight and his face wiped clean of any emotion.
We hadn't had a chance to talk since Fury was killed. No. Murdered. Everything had been a blur, all happening so fast I didn't think my brain had caught up yet. But Fury's words kept dancing around my head, and I didn't know what to do. Part of me wanted to reach out and take his hand, and let him know I was here if he needed. But as I thought about what Fury had said, a plan began to form in my head.
And for my plan to work, however crazy and dangerous and hard it would be, I would have to distance myself from Steve.
That was something I wasnt sure I could do.
As Steve and I neared the new directors office, we spotted a blonde woman emerging from the office doors. She saw us, and I almost swear I saw her visibly gulp when she saw us.
The Other Kate.
Or Sharon as she was apparently called.
I glared as she brushed past us, and when she investigated my green eyes her mouth twisted, and she looked away.
Yeah, I had that kind of effect on people.
"Captain," Sharon nodded at Steve as she walked, refusing to look at me. Steve marched onwards, and without looking at her or even batting an eye he replied.
"Neighbour."
Despite the dim situation I sniggered, earning me a disapproving glance from the guards stationed around the office. Security had been tripled, with agents placed around the facility 24/7. I sure as hell was glad I was above that job.
Not that mine was any better. Just a whole lot more complicated.
We stopped outside the office door, but a hand was placed across my chest, preventing me from going any further.
