C H A P T E R 25 | ONE LAST TIME
Flashback
"So there still letting you be leader huh?" Vince says tossing stones in the small lake in front of us.
I sit down on the grass which I pull out as a distraction. "I know you want to be leader Vince, but I'm next in line." I admit.
"I know. I know." He sighs. "I just think it would be cool."
"Being leader isn't about being cool." I told him. "Get your head out of the gutter."
"You don't have to be so rude all the time Elaina."
"Then don't say dumb things like that." I said.
"Forget it." He says dropping his rocks. "I'm going home."
"Wait." I said. "I'm sorry."
He stops and looks back. "I'm only stopping because I have to walk you home."
I playfully punch his arm. "You can't stay mad at me loser."
"You really know how to make a guy feel special."
"You're a boy Vincent." I laughed. "Race you home!"
Vincent and I made it to my house just before dark had set in. "I better get home." He says.
"It's dark." I told him. "Aren't you scared?"
"I'm not scared." He laughs. "Goodnight." He waved.
I waved back. "Goodnight Vinnie."
I sat in the kitchen the next morning with my parents eating breakfast at the table. The sound of are home phone ringing alerted us and my mother quickly got up to pick up the phone.
"Hello?" She answered.
"No I'm sorry, he's not here."
"Elaina have you seen Vincent?" She asks.
I shook my head.
"No." She replies. "We'll be right over."
"Hurry and eat, the Deterros need to speak to us. Vincent is missing."
My mothers grip tightened as we approached the house. My dad knocked a few times until the door had finally opened to reveal Vincent's father. "Where's Vince you little-"
"You sure you wanna complete that sentence?" My dad tells him. His nose scrunches up a bit which seems to frighten Vince's dad.
"I'm sorry about him, we both know how dangerous it is out here." His mom tells us. "We're worried."
"He walked me home yesterday past dark." I blurt out. "What if something happened?"
"We'll gather up a meeting." My dad tells them. "We'll be sure to find your son."
