I believe home more than anything is schedule with responsibilities. It's the physical embodiment of the mission. Given this, it makes sense to me that there would a period of adjustment for the space tomold to the mission's practicalities. With the building, it took the better part of a month for me to feel comfortable enough, to actually sleep in that archway on the first floor. I even battled the idea of bringing some beer in with me to help me get down, but backed away. I didn't want to get jumped, and even less did I want security or cops to have more reason to write me up or throw me in jail.
Instead, I made myself a cozy little nest of surplus blankets, and I stared at the over painted walls, and I either slept, or I didn't. If I didn't, I let myself open up to the sounds of the building. Stillness was the name of the game since the stairwell had motion detector lights. I had to wait after I came in for them to shut off, and then if I had to move I had to move real slow so they wouldn't get tripped again. Everynight I reminded myself this was a much better deal than than the bushes, or other places outside I would otherwise be sleeping in.
After I started sleeping it wasn't long before I started to sleep good, fetching seven or so solid hours every night. I'm not saying a person has to sleep that much, everyone is different and has their own rhythm they have to learn to respect, but for me it made a lot of difference. I found myself smiling more, smiling in the morning when I hid my bedding in a hedge around the corner, smiling more when I dumped my soda bottle pee jar into a trashcan about block away.Smiling to myself when I got my toiletries and hygiene done (I used several fast food chains so I didn't spend too long in their pubicbathrooms, and I always had money now to buy some coffee or whatnot.)Smiling when I hiked down to the China Town laundromat once a week,so I could clean my bedding and alternate pair of clothes.
Things were pretty good.
