The doorbell rang and I walked out of the kitchen and into the foyer. My hand slowly grabbed the doorknob and opened it to reveal a very tired-looking Tate Decorte.

I smiled at him, “Hey,” I said as I let him in. We faced each other and just kinda looked into each other’s eyes.

            “I um… I just wanted to apologize…” Tate said looking to his side, “I know I shouldn’t have… you know, I shouldn’t have gotten into a fight…”

            I nodded.

“It was immature and you have every right to be mad at me.”

“It’s okay… I forgive you,” I said looking at the floor and then back up into the bright blue eyes looking into mine. I stepped up to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. His hands cautiously moved to my waist. I put my head on his shoulder and realized I was on my toes. I breathed in the homey aroma of his cologne and pulled away.

We looked at each other again and I led him into the kitchen where Tate sat down at the island.

“Can I get you anything?” I asked. He looked around the kitchen, as if he was trying to find something.

“No, I’m fine thanks. I’m just here to keep you company.”

I smiled, “Yeah… thanks for coming.”

“Any time, you’re my friend. I’m here for you. Really, if you ever need someone to talk to, you know who to call.”

I nodded and looked at the floor. I really should be talking to Harry if I needed someone to talk to. Tate was just a friend.

“So talk to me Maya, is there something wrong?”

            I shrugged, “I don’t know… Harry and I got in a fight last night.”

Tate nodded, “How bad was it?”

I swallowed, “Pretty bad…” I turned around to start a pot of tea. Living with Harry made me start to drink a lot more tea and a lot less coffee than I did before I met him. It was crazy, because I loved coffee.

“Like, did he call you any bad names?”

“No!” I said spinning around to face Tate, I brought my voice down, “Harry would never… he would never call me something bad…”

“Sorry,” Tate said, “I just want to get a feel for what was said.”

“Well,” I started. I took a deep breath. “I tried to convince him that I only loved him… but he didn’t believe me. Which is crazy since I’m married to him… but then I asked why he had to be so protective over me and then he said that you were trying to steal me away from him. That’s when I got mad. Because I mean, you and me… we’re strictly friends. And yes, we did have a past and yes, you were my first boyfriend, but I love Harry now…”

Tate looked me straight in the eyes, “Yeah... No, I understand Maya. It’s just hard… because I just got out of a relationship. The girl who I went out with, her mother loved me but she didn’t. So, she left me for another guy, I don’t even know who. And now… you’re really my only friend who I can actually talk to about love.”
