MAYA’S P.O.V.

The rest of the day, Tate and I sat on his couch, and instead of watching TV we were just talking with each other about high school.

“I remember when you won gold in that track race… what was it? The thirty two hundred meters?” I poked Tate in his arm.

“Yep, the two mile…” he replied  smiling.

“That’s awesome… I remember how happy you were.”

“Oh I was thrilled,” Tate said, “And I remember hugging you first after I won.”

“Yeah, you were all sweaty and gross,” I teased.

“What did you expect?” Tate laughed, “I ran a two mile race!”

            I laughed too, “I’m kidding!”

He grinned, “Oh… but do remember how close we were in high school? The two of us were best friends…”

I smiled at the memory. Tate actually had a lot more friends than I did. I had around seven or so, but he was able to get everyone to like him. I had no idea how. Well, it was probably the looks for the girls, and I guess because he was such a cool and laid back guy, all the guys liked him too. They would invite him to all their parties, and Tate would ask if I’d like to come too, but I only said yes once. Everyone was always drinking at those parties, and I didn’t want to become one of those people. Besides, the people at those parties didn’t really like me anyways. They were only friends with Tate.

Tate and I really only started to like each other junior year. I don’t know what changed, but I saw him differently. He would always call me beautiful in the hallways and give me hugs out of nowhere. He always wanted to have his arms around me, and I was perfectly fine with that too.

People started to notice too, apparently and rumors started going around that we were dating. It made me laugh almost, but I couldn’t help but wish that they were actually true. My feelings started to change towards Tate.

I finally knew he liked me back when he kissed me for the first time. I smiled and went back to the memory.

Tate and I just walked into his house after school since I was going to tutor him in math since he did so badly on a recent quiz. I was the top of my Calculus class and my teacher loved me, so he recommended me to help other students who were struggling.

“We can go work upstairs in my room, it’s actually clean for once,” Tate said turning to face me in his foyer.

I laughed and Tate took my hand and led me upstairs and down the hallway leading to his room at the end. He closed the door behind us and I put my backpack down on one of his chairs.

“So, you actually understand Calculus?” he asked opening his backpack on his unmade bed.

“Yeah, it’s not so hard when you know what you’re doing…” I said opening my backpack also.
