☫ Chapter 18 ☫

There's this thing called the yawn effect.

To summarize simply, it's contagious yawning. In other words, that means it's a sort of psychological effect that occurs when someone sees, hears or reads about yawning. As a result of this, they end up yawning themselves. This knowledge is actually a great tactic to utilize for checking if someone is looking at you. No one but you notices the reaction.

I feigned a yawn, stretching my arm in a dramatic fashion and rolling my head slightly. Coincidently, gaining a convenient view of a certain someone. I felt my cheeks heat up when Kelly Palmer yawned, her brown eyes meeting mine. She narrowed them at me in an accusing matter, as if I was the one who initiated the present eye contact. I pursed my lips. She mimicked me with a huff and then turned her head to a different direction.

What does that mean? I ran my fingers through my hair, making it more unkempt than it originally was. To be perfectly honest, I still genuinely don't understand this girl. I slumped down in my seat, a bubbly sensation filling my stomach. Jude was seated next to me, his head tucked in his arms as he slept through the class. He looked much better than last night, his face no longer pale.

I softly smiled to myself and scanned the board, my eyes scrutinized. Mrs. Birch was discussing chemicals equations. Again. I sighed. That's all we ever talked about these days, which I suppose would be wonderful if it wasn't such a repetitive topic. And I really do like chemistry. Though, I don't particularly enjoy learning the same thing over and over again.

It made things boring. Which means that I had to make things more intriguing.

After all, when you're a superhero who attempts to maintain a schedule that accommodates with both your non-existent social life as well as your academic life, things aren't ever boring. In fact, things turn out rather unexpected. Sort of unpredictable.

Not that it wasn't before, but now it's at a different scale. A more intense one. I'm sure Dark Wonder would use the term 'super' in this context.

Here's an example of what I mean. Picture this: You're bored, to the extent that no amount of floating objects seem to make any difference. Despite the fact that you had to hold your laughter only moments ago when you inconspicuously creeped out overtired paranoid students. Which is funny in itself cause you're one of those teenagers. Then, suddenly something strange happens because during that mere lapse of absolute boredom, you avert your eyes to the window and it's in that second when you see something.

Something you wouldn't have seen if not for those circumstances.

I'll elaborate this chronologically. I'm a millennial. And being a twenty-first-century teenager means that you unavoidably have a short time span. I read an article about it and the source seems credible. However, I'm not mentioning this as an attempt to justify myself for doing exactly what's mentioned above. I'm aware that it wasn't the nicest thing. It's just, I was so bored and I know you can relate to that much at least.

     Right?

I pursed my lips, placing the palm of my hand under my chin and twirling my fingers around in a discrete manner. At least, I hoped it was discrete. Either way, I've stopped the matter of making things hover and went on to something else. My eyes stayed on the clock as I desperately attempted to shift the hands of them. Time was moving at an impossibly slow rate. Though, no one else appeared to be paying attention to such a dilemma.

My eyes turned its focus to my notebook noticing that rather than having them filled with notes, there were doodles. Cringe-worthy sort of drawings really. I blushed when I saw Kelly's name written and quickly scribbled over it with my pencil. With my heart beating faster, I let my knees bounce up and down. I crossed my arms over my chest and mindlessly stared at the window.
