Chapter 31

Mrs. Birch rolled her eyes and I thought that was a pretty normal reaction to something that was not so normal.

She looked at the scene before her in a way that expressed complete and utter agitation. There was worry etched in there too as she scrunched her eyebrows together and stress lines formed across her forehead. She definitely did not get paid enough to deal with this kind of situation. Not only that, but she wasn't equipped to deal with something so abnormal. In fact, the entire faculty and staff in the assembly room stared at the senior's movements apprehensively. Their eyes went from the rest of the students to the super-powered deranged teenager.

Immediately the police force took action.

"Evacuate the vicinity!" They yelled out.

Shoes screeched against the waxed floor as a group of police officers approached the exits and assisted the students. They wasted no time. No one knew how fast the drugs would take over. Safety for everyone was a top priority.

"Arrrrrgh!" The senior collapsed to his knees. His shoulders shook and he wrapped his arms around his body in pain.

Amid the organized chaos and terror-stricken student body, I stared at him longer than I should have. This was the perfect scenario to blend in with the crowd and hide my bag. It was the perfect time to swiftly change into my Blue Gravity costume and return to take care of the issue.

But I didn't do either of that. I didn't think about my next steps. I couldn't really. Not with the way he squeezed his eyes shut in agony or with the way he seemingly couldn't breathe. What was this reaction? Is this how everyone acts before gaining superpowers with these drugs?

I found myself in front of him, bent down on one knee and a hand on his shoulder.

"What is it?" I asked in a hushed whisper. "What's wrong?"

He picked up his chin, his eyes squinted, and his mouth open, letting out quick and helpless pants. Sweat dripped down his face. "They...they never said this--I don't want--I--" He was hyperventilating.

This couldn't be the right reaction to the super drugs? I never witnessed someone taking the drugs in front of me before, but this didn't seem right.

"Back up from him!" A police officer barked.

I looked up, my hand on his shoulder tightening unknowingly. "There's something wrong," I said. "I think he's having a seizure."

"He's about to get superpowers," the same police officer explained harshly. "You need to leave!"

I turned back to the senior. "He's--"

I let out a strangled gasp, stunned with the sudden force emitting from the senior and the way it felt against my palm that was still settled on his shoulder. I sharply pointed my gaze at his. Our eyes caught each other and I watched as his brown eyes widened, as if he was woken up. I applied pressure with both of my hands and made him stay put. The floor beneath us cracked but I don't think anyone around us would believe that's from me.

After all, I wasn't the one who swallowed a super drug in front of the police department.

I felt a hand wrap around my wrist. I looked at the senior, my blue eyes warning him. I don't know what possessed me to do this, but I couldn't just ignore the suffering he appeared to be in. Now I've reached a conundrum. There wasn't much I could do as Jeremiah Vincent, especially with the onlookers. Everyone left and it was only the police officers and us. We were surrounded. I could tell that they weren't sure how to proceed. I've created a liability. Stupid, Jeremiah.
