CHAPTER 11. The phone callI walked out of my Accounting class and straight to my apartment. It was the first day to teach Henry and I didn’t want to give his mother a bad impression. Mrs Ford begged so much to me so that I would be convinced to teach his brat of a child that I couldn’t say no. That chubby woman had a great ability to convince people.
“Hey Jade, where to so fast?” Dillan’s voice called while I was passing the main gate of the building. I turned around and gave him a short reply, “I’ll text you later.”
He shrugged his shoulder with confusion and went back to his friends while I went outside. I ran to the apartment and toward the elevators but there was sign board hanging aside of it which read, ‘Out of service.’Wow, seemed like God was on my side that day.
I ran my way through the stairs which triggered my asthma because the moment I reached the top of the stairs, I was huffing and puffing. If anyone saw me and was unaware about me, he would think I was crazy.
I was breathing heavily when I heard Ryan’s voice coming from the corridor. The tone he was talking with sounded very aggressive and frustrated. I peeped from the wall to see him; he was pacing back and forth the ends of the sides and kept on moving his free hand, while his other hand was busy in holding the phone to his ears.
I even saw Henry standing in front of my door but I didn’t come out because I had a better work to do, the work to discover what Ryan was talking about. It was very rare to see him so tensed up.
“Please, for me. You know how much you mean to me. And if anything happens to you then,” he paused, finding the correct words to say but it seemed like was failed as he sighed deeply, running his fingers frustatively through his hair like it would calm him down. “Then I don’t even know what I’ll do. So please, don’t even think about it, ever.”
The other person must be speaking something as Ryan stopped for a moment and listened carefully and nodded his head, making a sound of ‘Hmm’ every now and then.It was like my ears were raised so that I could hear properly. Who was he talking to? And that too so seriously?
He said something about something happening to someone, what was that all about? The time I was with Ryan, he never really talked about such a thing, about someone who was in danger or was not very well. What happened all of a sudden?
My head was filling up with numerous questions while my breathing was still very heavy when Henry’s irritating voice called out, grabbing my and Ryan’s attention,”Hey teacher. Why are you hiding there?”
Damn that kid!
I smiled nervously when I saw Ryan looking at him. I was eavesdropping, I was ought to be nervous. And that kid made me come outside. And the main thing, since when did he began to give me so much respect? He was calling me ‘Teacher’? Really?
Henry was grinning at him devilishly like he found a treasure and repeated again, “Why were you hiding?”I gave him a forced smile and replied,”I wasn’t hiding kid, just taking a break.”
“Break from what?” he asked quickly, like he was waiting for me to give a foolish answer so that he could ask me another question.
“Break from climbing the stairs.” I managed to say as I was already breathless.
“But this is your floor, isn’t it? Then why were you taking a break? Why didn’t you come to your apartment?” And the genius spoke again.
I walked to him with a fake smile plastered on my face and patted his cheek, hard and spoke,”You ask too many questions. If you would have asked these many questions to your teacher then your mother wouldn’t be so worried about your future.”
