Chapter 22

It's been a month. Me and Tristan have said nothing to each other. My mum is only just finding her feet and dads being an arse. I haven't got the strength to talk to him yet so reject all of his calls. I know what he will do. He will come back to us, telling us how much he misses us and then he will do it all again.

Connor left the hospital a few weeks ago and went home to recover with his family.

Just what I need right now...

I went to visit him last weekend and he is doing fine. He just gets tired easily but that's the least if what where is worries.

....

I walked into the kitchen and saw my mum making a cup of tea and talking to poppy. (Just incase you forgot - Poppy is my dog!)
"Mum, I'll take her. Just stay here" I said grabbing Poppy's lead if the side. She started jumping up me knowing what I was getting.
"Okay but do me a favour?" She asked quietly.
"Go for it" I smiled.
"Take Tristan with you".

Those five words whirled around my head about 100 times in that few seconds where I just stood there in complete silence.
"I uh... uh... What?" I said hoping I heard her wrong.
"Take Tristan with you. He has nothing to do so..."
"Ugh. Fine" I say walking out the kitchen with a dramatic sigh.
"You'll thank me later" she shouted laughing slightly.

Huh... This is going to be interestingly awkward.

----

The walk along the beach was awkward. Very awkward. We said nothing so I kept my head down. All I could hear was the distant sound of laughter or a dog bark. Happy people basically, nothing like us. A month ago me and Tristan walked down this same beach, but we talked and laughed, nothing like now. Poppy came running over with her ball and dropped it at my feet.
"Aren't you tired yet?" I mumbled picking up the ball and throwing it. She ran off to find the ball which left me and Tris alone again. We kept on walking in silence. Could it get anymore awkward?

"Chloe..."

Did Tristan just speak to me? I stopped walking and tried not to look shocked.
"Yeah"
"I'm sorry" he sniffed then broke down into tears. Should I hug him? What do I do?
"I um..." I looked down to avoid eye contact.
"I'm surprised your even stood next to me" I could tell he was trying to calm himself down - but failing. "I'm such a bad brother, what I did was stupid"

Well yeah it was - but I didn't say that.

"I don't know why I did it" he wiped his eyes.
"It's ok" I whispered.
"But it's not" he sighed. "Connor probably hates me".
"He just wants you to forgive him, he feels bad" I said now looking into his eyes.
"I don't know why I reacted like that. It's your life after all, I was trying to stop you from doing what you want."
"Why?" I dared to ask. "Why did you try and stop me?"
"Because I wanted what was best for you, I didn't think Connor was right for you". He looked down obviously ashamed. "And remember that one morning where I had a bad dream? Well you where crying because Connor hurt you and then I got angry and we fell out, it killed me! I know it was only a dream but it just wouldn't leave my mind, and then when I saw you with him, and well I just wanted to keep you safe. Not make my dream a reality". My heart sank. He only wanted to keep me safe.
"I understand" I knew exactly where he was coming from. It's been the same ever since we were little, we have always wanted what was best for each other. Now I know why he reacted like that. I pulled him in for a hug and we stayed there for a long time - but I felt comfortable.
"I'm so sorry" He sobbed.
"Tris it's fine" I felt like crying too but I had to stay strong.
"I shouldn't have ignored you either" he pulled away from the hug and looked back into my eyes.
"Did you honestly do all of that just to keep me safe?" I asked. He nodded ashamed. "Thank you".
"Please don't feel bad when your around Connor - I only want what's best, and if you love him then you should do what you want. It's not my decision. Just promise me if he ever does anything, you tell me" he was still being serious, which was cute. I smiled at him.
"Ok Dad" he laughed and so did I. This was how it used to be - how it should be.
"I'll explain every thing to Connor, he will understand. He just feels bad that's all, he's not angry". I didn't realise that Poppy had been by my feet the whole time.
"Ok" He looked down at Poppy and threw her ball. "Icecream?" He smirked.
"Why not?"

Maybe for once. Just once, things might be looking up for a change...
