I half-open my eyes, the light blinding me. I could not make sense of what was happening. Everything was in a haze, I couldn’t see anything properly. My head was burning, the pain making me unable to think. I could hear someone crying, Mom. And someone else trying to calm her, a soft, gentle voice.
Everything goes quite, I can hear the door close. Someone kisses my forehead, I can’t make out who it is, I am in too much of a confusion.
When I opened my eyes, it was dark but not completely dark. I could see a faint light coming from behind the curtains.
Curtains?
Windows?
Where was I?
I tried to get up, but my body screamed in pain. When I focused properly, I realized I was in my bedroom. Everything just the way I had left it. But what was I doing here?
I was at the carnival and then that fortuneteller. I fainted, I realized suddenly and someone carried me home. I don’t know what happened. I didn’t know how long I had been unconscious. I didn’t know the time. I assumed it must be around dawn and I was alone in my room having no idea how I got there.
Alone?
No I wasn’t alone. I could feel a warm presence. Beside me. By my bed. I tried to move my hand but I felt someone’s hand holding my hand. Then I realized it was Jeremy.
He had his eyes closed and his face facing away from me. But then slowly Jeremy looked up, his eyes red and his hair ruffled as well as his clothes. He looked at me and then smiled, happy to see me awake.
I must have been unconscious for a long time.
“Alison.” He whispered in a soft voice.
“Jeremy? How did I get here?”
“I got you here. You fainted.”
“But? How?” I asked sitting up, despite my body, which was aching.
“No time for questions.” He got up from the chair and poured me water from the bed side table.
“But that fortuneteller?” I asked worried, all of a sudden at remembering what Linda had said.
“She was crazy.”
“No she wasn’t. She said I…..”
“And I don’t care and neither should you.” Jeremy said firmly as he passed the glass of water to me. I took a sip, the water was cool and my head felt better gradually.
“But you shouldn’t be here. You know what she said.” I insisted again.
“That you’re going to do something horrible to me? To everyone? To her? No I don’t believe it.”
“But I do.”
“You shouldn’t.”
“She is a fortuneteller.”
“She was a fake one.”
“Who says?”
“I do and conversation about that crazy lunatic closed.” Jeremy said looking sternly.
