I looked towards the sun stretching away out of site. The balcony of my hotel room in Chicago gave a spectacular view in the evening. I could hear the traffic out on the large roads. I inhaled the fresh summer air. A light wind was blowing.
But instead of concentrating at the beautiful view around me I was lost in my own thoughts
“Alison?” I heard a soft voice from behind me.
It was Dylan.
“Hi Dylan,” I smiled at him as he came up to stand by my side.
“The view’s great,” He said looking out at the sky.
It’s weird how he never changed in all this time. He was wearing a blue shirt over denim jeans, his black hair messed up in a cute way.
“Yeah, when are you leaving?” I asked hoping it wasn’t going to be anytime soon.
It had been Dylan’s plan for months to go to New York for some work but he had delayed it because of me.
I didn’t want him to go.
“In a day or two. You sure you’ll be okay?”
“Yes and besides I have Jared and Jennifer with me. It’s been ages since we finished college. You should go.”
He didn’t reply so I took my time inspecting him. So much had changed since I had been living in New York. It just seemed like a mere memory now.
“What are you starting at?” Dylan asked me with a playful smirk on his face.
“Nothing,” I mumbled averting my eyes, blushing.
Dylan chuckled, he was actually quite attractive.
“Jennifer is waiting for you in the lobby,” he added after a while.
“Really? Couldn’t you have told me that before? She will kill me,” I said with sarcasm in my tone.
“Wild cat,” Dylan muttered to himself in a low tone.
That was his very annoying nick name for me.
I am not wild.
“What did you just say?” I asked closing the distance between us.
He knew he was in trouble.
“Nothing,” It was his turn to look away, moving back.
“Oh let’s go then,” I said smiling at him
There was complete silence between me and Dylan as we walked.
Silence.
I didn’t feel like talking anymore.
We strolled downstairs silently to see Jennifer jumping in excitement.
“What’s up?” I asked casually as I joined her. Surprised. Well she was Jennifer and she was always excited about something. She had helped me through a lot. I could trust her with my life.
I smiled at Jared who stuck his tongue out at me.
Very mature.
It had been almost a year or two since the death of my family and the disappearance of Jeremy. It had took me a long time to recover from the shock. But I had finally made my way out of the trauma and had finished college with my three friends.
It had been a month since college had been finished and we were on vacation.
If you could call it that.
Jennifer was the one who was the most excited. She had stayed by my side the whole time along with Dylan and Jared had supported her.
“There is a super cute guy in this hotel,” she whispered so that Jared wouldn’t hear. Well yeah, obviously he wouldn’t like her talking about some other guy. They were such a happy couple.
Sometimes I felt myself envying her for the perfect life that she had.
She grabbed my hand pulling me to the side so that Dylan or Jared wouldn’t hear.
“Okay,” I said shaking my head confused. I simply didn’t know why she would tell me that more be excited about it.
“Actually that’s not it. The heir of the biggest business company of the world is staying here in this hotel and Jennifer is going crazy,” Jared added rolling his eyes. It was obvious that he had heard.
“Yes it is so amazing. They are saying he is quite handsome. You have a chance,” She said happily, winking at me.
Seriously? I thought to myself.
Jennifer will never change.
“What? No way! Who is saying anyway?” I immediately replied stating my answer.
I have had enough.
“The girls. There is so much hype going on. Where have you been?”
“I was tired,” I lied.
What else was I supposed to say?
“Old habit,” Dylan added smirking.
Jennifer frowned at me and gave Dylan a death glare, who immediately straightened his face.
“Okay okay don’t look at me like that. I’ll think about it.” I said in a low voice. I had no intention what-so-ever to think about it but I told her anyway. At least it would make her happy.
“Yes!” Jennifer said getting excited again.
“Let’s go out to the pool,” Jared jumped in clearly wanting to change the subject.
I wasn’t interested either.
“Great idea,” Dylan giving Jennifer a wink.
“Jerk.” Jennifer shot back immediately making all of us laugh.
It wasn’t that she hated Dylan, they were really good friends but often got on each other’s nerves.
I was ready to go but then I realized I had left me cell phone up in my hotel room.
“Oh, I forgot my cell phone you guys go ahead I won’t be a minute.” I said giving them an apologetic smile.
“Want me to accompany you?” Dylan asked.
“No thanks. I’ll be back in a second.”
With that I started making my way back to the hotel room. There was a lot of commotion on the stairs, people were coming and going.
Who was going to call me anyway?
I was doing this on pure instinct. My heart was starting to beat faster than before and a hollow feeling was growing in my stomach.
Trying to stay out of people’s way I reached the top of the stairs. The hallway was nearly deserted. Every step that I took seemed to lead me somewhere.
Where I always belonged.
I had never felt like this before. Something was going to happen.
What? I didn’t know.
And then suddenly I bumped into somebody.
Damn. Why do I always end up embarrassing myself?
