At 9 I woke up again and this time I first changed my clothes then made my way downstairs. I knew that someone was in the living room because of voices. As I walked into the room I knew she would be there and seconds later I saw her sitting alongside Kevin on the couch.
She was pretty, one thing I couldn’t lie about; she had brown eyes and blonde hair with sharp features and a slim body.
As soon as she saw me, she came running up to me and hugged me; surprised at her sudden outburst I didn’t know what to say.
“Alison! We were wondering when you’d wake up; I’ve been dying to meet you," she said as soon as she backed away from me. She was smiling wide, her blue eyes shinning.
“I stayed up late last night so I was a bit tired," I replied, giving her a sheepish smile.
“Well why don’t you settle yourself on the couch and I’ll make you breakfast," she said, walking into the kitchen.
My kitchen.
Our kitchen. Not hers.
As soon as she was out of the room I turned to Kevin and tried not to glare.
“Why didn’t you tell me Rachel was coming?”
“I didn’t know,” he replied awkwardly and I immediately knew he was lying.
“You’re lying Kevin,” I said keeping my voice low. Kevin didn’t reply as he turned his eyes away from mine and positioned them on the television screen.
“You’re going to have to tell me later,” I said before I turned to walk into the kitchen. Kevin looked at me, red in the face; then turned his eyes away.
I knew I didn’t hate Rachel, she was nice and always had been nice to me. Mom and Dad but I still didn’t like the idea of her living with us. She’d spoil everything, well she had spoiled it by coming here but still I wanted her to leave then ashamed at my thoughts I decided to give her a chance if it made Kevin happy.
I knew he was feeling embarrassed and guilty all over again but I knew that he wouldn’t have let her come here unless it wasn’t urgent. So with all these thoughts whirling in my head I joined her in the kitchen so that I could make her feel welcome to my home. Anyway she was part of our family and I had to be a good host and not make her feel out of place.
I had to be a good host.

A week passed without such incident, Mom and Dad came back from London soon after Rachel’s arrival; Mom I knew, was shocked but if she was she didn’t show it. She was a better host than me and greeted Rachel warmly. Dad didn’t say anything much, but I knew he didn’t like the idea of her staying with us.
Kevin was desperate, he didn’t know what to say to us, which was fine because whatever it was I didn’t want to hear it. I had not spoken to Kevin properly since Rachel had arrived, I had been busy with school and didn’t have time. Well that was just an excuse but I wanted it to be that way and Kevin made no attempt to talk to me either.
Jeremy was the same as usual; he was back to normal again, called me every night and we would stay up talking till 2-3 am in the morning. It was easier talking to him now, he was more open than before; and he was an interesting person to talk to.
He came back to sit with me, and Justin, without any complaint moved out of the way. Tiffany had made no comment on Jeremy coming back to sit with me, she was cool about it and I immediately saw that she and Jeremy were good friends. I didn’t like the idea of it but I decided it would be better if I kept my mouth shut.
At about 11 at night on Sunday I was lying on my bed, talking to Jennifer on call when someone knocked on the door; I quickly said goodbye to Jennifer, got up and opened the door. Kevin was standing on the door looking uneasy, he looked at me for a second before he could say anything.
“Mind me coming in?” he asked after a while when I didn’t say anything.
“Yeah sure," I said trying not to sound rude as I turned away and sat down on my desk, Kevin sat down on my bed.
“I won’t take much of your time, I just came to tell you something,” he finally spoke up.
His face was blank, I suddenly felt my heart beats drumming in my ears and I knew whatever he was going to tell me was not going to be good. Struck in these thoughts I forgot to reply, when I didn’t say anything; Kevin decided to continue.
“Alison I’m really sorry about Rachel staying over here, I knew she was going to come but she told me just a day before she arrived and I couldn’t stop her. But I knew you people wouldn’t be happy so, I made arrangements”.
I looked at him blank, not guessing what he was about to say.
“So I’m going to move out,” he said finally sighing immediately after saying it as if he was regretting what he was saying.
But I didn’t care I was too caught up in the shock, I knew that I didn’t want Rachel to stay over here but I did want Kevin to stay. I had missed him terribly while he was away, and now he was going away again. I felt a huge burden on my heart and I knew I was going to burst into tears soon.
I wanted Kevin to stay here and Rachel to go away. Go away, out of our lives. But I knew I was being selfish after all he was her husband and Kevin loved her. I doubted it, that he would ever leave her. He left us for her.
Why would he leave her?
I opened my mouth to say something but no words came out so I closed it, afraid I’d say something I shouldn’t. When I didn’t reply Kevin stood up from the bed and walked towards the door then turned around.
“I’ll be gone when you come back from school tomorrow, so I guess goodbye.”
He smiled at me sadly and then left closing the door lightly behind him, as soon as he out of the door I collapsed on my bed, crying.
Why me?
Why us?
