CAL
"You guys caught Samson Merandus?" Mare says in disbelief, crossing her arms at Shade and Farley– who are both looking tired from their mission.
"Well, it wasn't easy. But he's in the cell downstairs," Shade nonchalantly shrugs, wiping blood off his cheek. There's a cut that starts from his lower left cheek, goes down to his jawline, and ends at his chin.
Farley notices this, she grabs a cloth and wipes off the excess blood with a frown. Shade only smirks at her, making her frown deepen.
"You could've gotten an injury far worse than a cut," she mutters.
"Anyway, the cell, it's the one surrounded with Silent Stone, correct?" I confirm.
Farley and Shade both nod, before talking amongst themselves. Mare glances over at me, giving me a knowing look and gestures to the two of them.
"And in case the silent stone doesn't work, which is nearly impossible, we have a few silencers down there."
"When will you guys take him to the Council?"
"Hopefully by next week," Shade nods, waving Farley's hand away. She doesn't let this stop her from still wiping the blood off.
"We also have Newbloods unpacking the goods we got," she states, muttering something about the mission.
"Stole," Mare coughs.
"Hypocrite," Shade coughs in return.
The siblings give each other a look, Shade sticking his tongue out while Mare is ready to jump at him.
"By the way, we need Cal for a morning mission tomorrow."
"Why him?" Mare asks for me, looking from Shade to Farley.
"We need his ability to... burn files."
"Yeah, alright I'll go. What time do you need me?"
Mare gives me a look as if I'm crazy for going on this mission.
"But you just had a mission a week ago," she argues.
"Exactly Mare," I point out, "a week ago."
"We also need his piloting skills," Shade pops in, marking Mare's glare intensify.
"But I can't be in the same room with Avery without you! Do you want me to electrocute her?!"
"You'll be alright. It's just a couple of hours, right?" Mare looks at Farley, who nods her head.
"Fine. I'm coming with you guys," Mare declares crossing her arms again. For being the shortest out of all of us, she still looks a little bit intimidating. But mostly cute for the way she's trying to act.
"I can take care of myself Mare."
"I'm not talking about just you," she points to Farley and Shade, "I'm talking about these two idiots who'll get themselves in trouble."
"But if we bring you, the trouble will already be there," I chuckle, earning a glare from her.
"You'll need me for the cameras."
"Who said anything about cameras?"
She glares at Shade, scoffing. "If you're burning files no doubt there'll be something protecting them."
"But we'll bring Ella with us. So don't worry," Farley says, putting an hand on Mare's shoulder. She looks at the hand and back at Farley, rolling her eyes.
"But–"
"Nothing. We need you here just in case something happens," I finalize, and she sighs.
"Alright. I guess I can keep an eye on Samson."
"Good. Now, I'm going to go check if he's awake," I turn around, head for the stairs while listening to Shade arguing with Mare.
•••
For being sick, Samson is awfully pale. Too pale. It's not the average silver skin color. It's pure white, like a sheep or a sheet of fresh snow. Nonetheless, he's awake, and not too happy with this current condition.
"Finally came to visit me nephew?" He feigns a smile, slouching against the bars.
"I'm not your nephew," I whisper, the curves of my lips pulling into a frown.
"As long as Maven lives, technically you are and I'm you're uncle."
"Well, technically you're not. Julian will always be my uncle. And you'll always be Maven's."
"But we're family," he scoffs, acting as if he's offended.
"You stopped being my family a long time ago."
"Is that so? Well, that's too bad. Guess I'll rot here for the rest of my lonely life."
"Can't say I'll miss you."
"Me either, nephew."
I leave him cold in the cold cell, with balled fists and a heavy heart.
