MARE

I rock myself back and forth, hoping this nightmare will soon end.

Farley tries to calm me down, since the aircraft and my electricity don't mix well but nothing seems to stop me from thinking about Cal or Maven, or the dead babies that I've gotten these past few weeks.

I try to calm down and think of happier things but nothing works. I wasn't until Farley's news that made me relax a little.

"We're going to our base in Piedmont,  hopefully Maven won't find us there. I've contacted the other aircrafts. Cal is safe, he's a little injured, but nothing serious happened."

"And Maven and his uncle?"

"He's gotten a hold of Samson, but other than that, he's gone. After he retrieved him, Maven and his crew left," Farley says, taking a seat next to me.

All I need this Cal. I don't want to be the dramatic teenager in love but seeing him okay will make me feel better.

"He's fine," Farley says, giving me a look, "Shade is with him too. And Cameron."

"What?" I jump up so fast the aircraft shakes. "Shade was there too? Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because of this! Calm yourself Barrow, there are children on this aircraft."

"The children will be fine," I brush her aside.

"Just... go sleep or something. I'm worried about you Barrow. If you don't rest, I'll make you."

"Okay," I quietly say, giving her a small smile that she returns.

After hours of flying, we finally arrive to a base in Piedmont. It's smaller but more reserved than the other one back in Norta, but no one has complained about it.

People are going back and forth from the hangars to the base, transporting materials and everyone's belongings.

In the midst of all the commotion, I see Shade coming down from the aircraft he was in and I run to him.

"You bastard! How could you not tell me where you were and why did you do that?"

"Good to see you too sis," Shade laughs, pulling me into a hug.

I see a familiar figure standing behind him, so he pulls away, telling me that he'll be looking for Farley.

Cal looks at me with a smile, but it quickly fades when I slap his shoulder hard. He grunts, and I start my rant.

"And you! Why did you just- I can't believe you- Ugh! Don't ever just push me into an aircraft like that! I was so worried that-"

I let out a cry and hug him. He rubs my back and kisses the top of my forehead, stroking my hair so softly it makes my anger and anxiety melt. We stay like this for a bit, until he speaks up.

"I know, I'm sorry. I just wanted you safe."

"And I want to kick you in the groin," I deadpan but he pulls away and eyes me.

"Please don't,  I just burned myself with the help of my dear uncle and brother."

"You saw him?" The image of Maven's eyes flash into my mind.

"Yeah, I did. It wasn't the family reunion I hoped for."

"What happened?"

"Well," he says, putting an arm on my shoulder and walking into the base, "we said some things, he got mad, and then Samson used his abilty to try to burn the inside of my body. Then your brother came but I was passed out by then."

"You need to see Sara," I suggest, but he stops me short.

"No, she needs to rest first. We all do. So, let's grab our things and find a room. I'll he okay," Cal says, pulling me to the cafeteria where everyone's stuff is.

Later that night, I'm huddled in a blanket with Cal, who strokes my hair.

"I have a question," I say, turning to Cal.

"What is it?"

"When you kissed me in the ballroom that night, were you ever planning on telling Maven?"

He thinks for a moment, and shakes his head.

"I don't know actually. Even though he saw us through the cameras, I wouldn't know what to do if he hadn't. I mean, Elara could've exposed you in front of all the High Houses, Maven would hate the both of us, or my father would've yelled at me."

"What would've happened if... If I was actually a daughter of House Titanos? And we still met that night the same way we did but I went through Queenstrial and showed off my electricity, would you have picked me?"

"Of course. I think the night we met was pretty romantic. Like something out of a movie," Cal jokes, making me laugh.

"If only things weren't as messed up," I whisper.

"At least one thing isn't messed up," he stares into my eyes, his golden ones igniting with passion.

"I love you Mare. You're the one that I'll always choose, whether or not you believe it."

He gives me a kiss on the lips, starting to hover over me.

"I love you Cal," I say in between kisses.

He cups my cheek and I arch my back when he starts to kiss my neck, going lower to my crotch. The door bursts wide open before we can do anything else and we both freeze.

"Hey guys I just- Oh my god!"

Kilorn stands there with a shocked look on his face, and Cal and I quickly jump out of the bed, standing up.

"Jeez, I should've knocked. I just wanted to say Farley wants you guys to train the Newbloods tomorrow at ten. You can... go back to what you were doing," he shivers in disgust, probably traumatized that he walked in on us almost doing it.

After Kilorn shuts the door, Cal bursts out laughing and soon I join him too. We crawl back into the bed, cuddle for a bit before I hear Cal's soft snores. I wrap my arms around him, and start to drift off myself.

For the first time in weeks, I finally slept well.
