MARE
My eyes flutter open, and I see the sun break through the windows. Cal is still beside me sleeping, his face so peacful than it usually is. It feels weird to wake up with him, since he's been gone doing missions early in the morning with Farley before.
After last night, there's no doubt in my mind about how much he means to me. Just being next to him is surreal. Especially after what's been happening these past few weeks.
Ugh. Look at you, being so sappy.
I snuggle closer to him, taking in his warmth. Even though spring is here in Piedmont, there's a light breeze in the room and the air is chilly. Whether he realizes it or not, he wraps his strong arms around my waist, and I feel safe.
"Mare?" I hear someone say on the other side of the door, "it's me, Avery."
I don't answer the door, instead, I pull the covers closer to my body and sigh. It's too early to deal with Avery, especially when I'm going to spend the whole day training with her.
"Mare? I need to talk to you," she starts knocking on the door, annoying the hell out of me.
"Mare!!!" She starts to shout, and I get up with a frown on my face.
"What?!" I swing the door open, giving her a glare.
"I just wanted to say that we're training in the big greenhouse."
"Okay."
"And..." she continues.
"What?" I ask her with an agitated tone in my voice.
"Nevermind. I'm surprised you answered."
"The only reason why is because you were so loud I was afraid Cal would wake up. He needs to rest before we train."
"Cal's in there?" She says with mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Yeah, and I was sleeping. Now if that's all..."
"I heard what happened to him. I find it funny how you left him like that. I would've stayed and helped instead of being a scared bitch."
"Avery, if you don't want to be electrocuted, I suggest that you leave," I say calmly.
"Just saying," she shrugs.
I slam the door in her face and walk over to the bed. After getting under the covers again, Cal opens his eyes and smiles.
"Morning."
"Yeah, yeah."
"What's wrong?" He chuckles, kissing my cheek.
"Nothing, let's go back to sleep," I put my head on his chest, and he wraps his arms around me.
"Okay."
With that, my eyes start to drop and I drift off into a dreamless sleep again.

"Your goal is to hit the target while dodging the fireballs I send," Cal instructs the group of Newbloods, who listen intently at him.
"Make a line with two rows, and when Mare shouts to go, you guys start running and hit the target. If you get hit with a fireball, you know where the infirmary is."
I look at Cal and we nod, so I shout the command to go.
Within seconds, a ball of fire is headed toward me, but I dodge it and look at Avery, who smirks.
"Hitting the instructor won't be taken lightly," I announce and send a small spark that shocks her.
"Consider it a warning," I look straight at her, glaring at her stupid face.
The next pair of Newbloods go, a nymph starts to prepare a ball of water from the nearby bowl but instead of hitting the target, he hits Cal's fireball. The other Newblood, a greenwarden, dodges and hit the target with a vine.
"Kaylor, you used your ability to also defend yourself. Adam, your aim is improving. Good job you guys."
The two boys smile, high fiving each other and gushing about how a silver complimented them.
The day continues with us working with skills and controlling their abilities, and sooner than I expected, it's lunchtime and we're all eating sandwhiches.
I take a bite of mine, and feel a churning feeling in my stomach. My face scrunches up and I gag at the taste.
"Mare?" Cal asks.
Without answering, I get up, and run out of the greenhouse. I hear Avery and her friends cackling behind me but all I can think about is the disgusting taste and the horrible feeling in my stomach.
Dun dun dun! What did Avery do? Will Mare be okay?
