CAL
BOOM
My chest hitches with an intake of breath.
Mare looks at me with fear for the first time in a while in her eyes, calling her lightning to her hands.
The reds in the control room open the security footage from cameras placed all around the base, finding the main hidden entrance destroyed into bits.
Familiar uniforms come out of the aircraft, along with the devil himself.
"Maven," Mare whispers, furrowing her brows. There's panic written across her face, along with anger.
"Mare, let's go!"
I grab her by the shoulders and give her a tiny push.
"Wait Cal, Cal!" She says, trying to stop me.
"Yes?"
"What are you doing?"
"Making sure you stay safe," I say with a firm tone.
When we walk to the hangars, loads of people are already crowding around the planes, waiting to escape.
"Hold on, I'm staying!" Mare exclaims.
"No, you're going with Farley. I can't lose you again Mare, I can't."
"I'm telling you Cal, I'll be fine!" She argues with me.
"You just got mind controlled by Samson and got hurt with your own lightning which causes you to burn yourself. You can barley stand and you're out of breath easily. I'm not letting you hurt yourself more. Please Mare, just go with them."
"No!" She stubbornly disagrees, pushing on my shoulder.
"There isn't enough time. I'll find you soon after all this but please, just listen to me this once."
"I can't leave you alone!" She argues.
"You'll have to try," I say, kissing her before running away.
Her screams of protest grow stronger as the crowd of scared Reds push her into the aircraft.
I run the opposite direction, watching the aircrafts fly away.
Shade and Cameron soon find me, and together we wander around the hallways looking for anyone who hasn't been rescued and for Maven and his crew.
I keep running and don't think, and it isn't until I feel a presence do I stop. Shade and Cameron are no where to be found.
"Hello brother." His icy cold eyes greet me.
"Mavey, you look swell."
"I bet I look better than your girlfriend," he says, igniting a ball of fire and sending it my way.
I quickly dodge it, sending one of my own towards him. He was too busy looking around to not notice it coming to him so it burns a patch of his uniform up.
"I'm sorry, did I hurt you?" I say sarcastically.
He groans and makes another ball of fire, one larger than his last. I call on mine and make a wall of fire to trap him in the hallway so I can find shade and Cameron.
I run again, not thinking about the hallway I'm in.
It's Samson's dungeon.
I body tenses when I see him on the floor with a ghost smile on his lips. He senses my second of weakness and forces me to stay in my place.
Stay there. Stay.
I try to fight my hardest but nothing works, it only makes the pain in my head stronger.
Moments later, Maven catches up and laughs once he sees the position I'm in.
"I thought you were smart, brother."
"And I thought you were my brother, brother."
"If only Elara can see this now," he tsks and circles around me like a predator stalking its prey.
"At least we have one thing in common. Both of our moms are dead," I grunt as I try to move out of Samson's control.
"Mare. How is she? How did she like the babies? How does she like it knowing you're here, living your last moments with me?"
"I'm not going to die Maven. No matter how much you think you hate me, you can't kill me," I scrunch my face up and glare at him.
"Which is why I'm making dear Uncle Samson make you kill yourself," he has an evil look in his eye, something I've seen during our time in the Bowl of Bones.
Just as I see Samson looking at me, my vision goes dark, and the whole world fades away.
•••
"Calore! Cal!"
"Cameron, stop kicking him!"
"Well how am I supposed to know he's not dead? The man is barely breathing!"
My eyes burst open, and immediately, Shade and Cameron step back.
"Woah there buddy, chill. We're on an aircraft headed to Piedmont," Shade says, giving me a glass of water.
"What happened?" I rub my face and sit up.
"Well, just before your trash of an uncle was gonna make you kill yourself with your own fire, this big boy came in and grabbed your ass," Cameron claps Shade's back, who slaps her hand away.
The same thing happened to Mare. When we were in the room and her electricity became blue, it burned her skin.
As if remembering too, Shade looks at me with worried eyes.
"Hey, let's try to get some rest first okay? I'll contact Farley so your girl won't electrocute everyone on that aircraft," Cameron says, noticing the discomfort.
