4. Communication

I just didn't get it. These taps, scratches and scrapes seemed almost like they were in a pattern, but at the same time they were so irregular like the person was just hacking at the wall. I did consider myself to be quite smart as a child , however, that was before I spent half of my childhood without an education so as you would expect my logic wasn't quite on point at this moment. As the noises continued, my frustration grew more and more until I'd just had enough. 'Why can't you just learn the bloody alphabet?' I yelled to only hear an even louder and more frequent tapping response. Wait a second, the taps, louder, different patterns, the alphabet, that's it. 'The taps each link to a letter in the alphabet!' I called out in joy to hear an exited scraping response.

Immediately, I snatched one of the broken slate pieces off of the ground and eagerly began to carve the alphabet in to the wall as fast as I could 'one minute' I shouted. Once it was completed, I quite loudly said 'A' and nervously waited for a response; my whole future could depend on this one moment. To my relief, I heard a single tap response and scraped 1t into the wall and repeated the same process for the rest of the alphabet. Now I had a scrape and tap alphabet which I'm guessing they already have on the other side so all I have to do is ask a question.'What is your name?' I asked ( I thought I'd start simple) and awaited for their answer. Once the tapping began, I started to spell out the word 'C, H, R, I, S, Chris, I'm Rose and I'm 16 what about you?'. Just like that, we started to talk and I learned so many things about him like how he was 17 and was invaded too but he wasn't from the same place as me clearly as he didn't even know what a mobile phone was. The thing that was weird was that I felt connected to him although I hadn't even seen him face to face or heard his voice; he could be a goblin for all I know but there was just something about him.
