Toad-Like Professor

The great hall had it's usual start of term appearance, candles were floating in the air and the ceiling mimicked the sky and weather outside. Making your way to the Slytherin table you scanned the teachers table wondering who they hired as this years defense against the dark arts teacher. Your eyes landed on a woman clattered in a pink outfit, short brown curly hair was held in place by a terrible pink band which matched her overly pink outfit. In your opinion her face reminded you of a toad. "Looks like Hagrid isn't the Care of Magical Creatures professor." Lilly's voice suddenly interrupted your thought process. "And we are going to be taught by a toad lady." You and Lilly shared an amused smile while Jasmine glared at both of you. The doors of the Great Hall opened and Professor McGonagall entered carrying the stool which the sorting hat sat, a line of first years followed closely behind the Professor and lined up in front of the teachers table. Once Professor McGonagall placed the stool and hat down you watched the Sorting Hat as the tear near the brim opened like a mouth and started singing.

In times of old when I was new and Hogwarts barely started, the founders of our noble school thought never to be parted; united by a common goal, they had the selfsame yearning, to make the world's best magic school and pass along their learning. Together we will build and teach! The four good friends decided and never did they dream that they might someday be divided. For were there such friends anywhere as Slytherin and Gryffindor? You glanced over at the Gryffindor table, finding it difficult to believe Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor were good friends.  Unless it's the second pair of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw? So how could it have gone so wrong? How could such friendships fail? Why, I was there and so can tell the whole sad sorry tale.

Slowly you started zoning out of the song picking up a few sentences here and there but didn't pay much more attention until the hall broke out in to claps which you quickly joined in with. You watched as the first years sat on the stool after their names were called, watched their either excited or petrified faces as they went to their house tables. Once the last girl by the name of Rose Zeller was sorted McGonagall left with the stool and sorting hat. You watched Dumbledore rise to his feet. "To our newcomers, welcome! To our old hands, welcome back! There is time for speech making but this is not it. Tuck in!" The hall filled with quiet chatter as students began to eat. "I wonder what danger the sorting hat was singing about?" Jasmine asked leaving Lilly to shrug as she kept eating and you to glance down at you arm before going back to eating. Annoyed the red-haired girl huffed and quickly finished her food.

Once the students had finished and allowed there talking to rise in volume Dumbledore stood up causing the noise to die down almost instantly. "Now that we are all digesting another magnificent feast, I beg a few moments of your attention for the usual start of term announcements. First years ought to know that the forest in the grounds is out of bounds to students, and a few of our older students ought to know by now too." Your eyes moved back over to the golden trio at the last comment made by Dumbledore. "Mr Filch, the caretaker, has asked me, for what he tells me is the four hundred and sixty-second time, to remind you all that magic is not permitted in the corridors between classes, nor are a number of things, all of which can be checked on the extensive list now fastened to Mr Filch's office door."

"We have two changes in staffing this year. We are very pleased to welcome back Professor Grubbly-Plank, who will be taking Care of Magical Creatures lessons; we are also delighted to introduce Professor Umbridge, our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher." You slowly gave a small polite clap with the other students. "Tryouts for the House Quidditch teams will take place on the..." You, as well as the other students were confused as to why Dumbledore had suddenly stopped his speaking. "Hem, Hem." You gaze travelled to Professor Umbridge, the woman wearing way too much pink was now on her feet and clearly wanted to have her own speech. Dumbledore, seemingly interested in whatever his woman wanted to say took a seat, the other Professor's didn't try very had to hide their surprise.
