"You're kidding!" Ellie and I were sitting on her porch. The sun was setting and it was at that point in the evening when the sky got all shades of orange and yellow and red and everything was golden and the trees almost seemed like they were smiling at you, saying goodnight. There were plenty of trees around Ellie's house. She lives just outside the city with the rest of the big houses.
"Not kidding!" I said with a smile and a bit of a blush on my cheeks. I had just told her the whole story about spot and me.
"Addy I totally called it! This is so exciting a real beau wow! I've never had a real beau."
"He's not my beau ellie. And what about Trevor?"
"Oh Trevor's a prick and I'm just forced to be around him because my mother makes me."
"Oh yeah and what about..." I say in a sing songs voice, "muuuush?" Ellie blushes a deep red and nudges me.
"Shut up addy me and mush aren't anything either"
"Yeah well neither is me and spot alright" I smile at her "not officially anyway"
"Oh yeah well then what are you and spot"
I look down at the ground trying to think of how to answer. What were me and spot? He hadn't asked me to be his girl and he's not my beau officially so I guess we're just, "friends" I say with an uncertainty to my voice.
"Friends? Well golly you guys are friends who spend a lot of time kissin each other"
"Ellie! We do not!"
"That's not what I hear" she giggles a bit
"Well until he tells me otherwise we're friends ok?"
"Ok then" she says obviously teasing me
And then something hits me that I had been wanting to ask ellie for some time now since I had found out the news myself.
"Hey ell?"
"Yeah?"
"Can you tell me about how you knew me before I was a newsie?"
The color drained from her face. She looked dark and conflicted. She waited a long time before she spoke and I let her because I figured it was a new subject for her too.
"We were neighbors" she said finally "you lived in a beautiful White House with blue shudders around the windows and the most magnificent flowers Anyone had ever seen. You lived there with your mother for most your life."
"Not my father?"
"Well you see you didn't exactly have one."
"I..I didn't?"
"No, but your mother was the loveliest woman I had ever met. There was always something cooking when I would come over and there was always something cooking. And she was so sweet addy I wish you could remember-"
"But I do." I cut her off "I remember she used to sing a song, I still sing it at night"
Ellie smiled. It was a sad smile though. A reminiscent one.
"What happened to her ellie?"
"Well after you went missing, she stopped at nothing to find you. She was so fiercely independent, god your just like her. Anyway, she went out looking for you one night and she never came back. The police sent out a search party but she was never found. They.."
"They what?"
Ellie got very quiet "they assumed her dead"
I looked down. "But if my mama was so lovely how come your mama still doesn't like me?"
"My mother doesn't really believe in unmarried women. She felt bad of course when your mother..well you know. But when you came back and she found out you were a street kid she really didn't approve."
"Why did you keep all this from me for so long?"
"Jack told me too, he found me after you did and begged me not to tell you. He said it was for your own good or something"
And then the sun set all the way. And the sky was purple and pink for a moment. And then it was dark.
"I should get going"
"I love you addy you know that. Please don't be mad that I didn't tell you"
I smiled "how could I be mad at you ellie? Your my bestest girl friend" and then with one jump I was gone and off back to the lodge house.
