When I got back to the lodging house it was full of newsies. And among them all I could not find spot so I figured I would go upstairs and see if he was in his room. I reached the door and was about to just turn the handle and go in, but then I remembered it was not my room, and I should probably knock. So I did, I knocked. The door was answered by a very stern looking spot. But the expression faded slightly when he saw me.
"Ya don't have ya knock as long as your stayin in this room ya know" he smirked and then stepped away from the door, leaving a path for me to come in.
"So uh how did it go with bates?"
Spy looked up from the dresser where he was apparently looking for something in his shirt drawer. He groaned a bit and then continued his search.
"Can't really talk about that"
"Oh, that's fine" I awkwardly sat down on the bed. I had been rehearsing what I would say to him in my head the whole way back. But now that I was here I had completely forgotten. "So um, Ellie's Mom always does this fall ball thing and I'm since I'm ellies best friend she always sneaks me in and stuff." Spot had stopped shuffling around in his shirt drawer and moved on to the box on top of the dresser. "So this year ellie is taking someone and so she told me to go with someone and-" spot stopped looking in the box and turned towards me. "And well I was just kind of wondering, only since I don't really know anyone else here, and I'm banished from manhattan, well I was just wondering-" and then my voice got very quiet and I looked down at my lap. "If maybe you wanted to go with me?" I looked up at spot who was smirking like crazy.
"Only since ya don't know anyone else, huh?"
"What?" Even I had forgotten what I had said whilst babbling out words
"You said you only was gonna ask me because ya don't know anybody else" spot walked over to me. I stood up, not enjoying the feeling of him towering over me as I sat on the bed. Little did I know that when I stood up my face would only be centimeters from spots.
"Oh, I'm yeah I guess that's why, I mean it's not like I haven't met anyone I just, ya know, know you the best. And I figured-" I was babbling again and managed to stop before I said anything stupid.
"Now I's no expert at goin ya balls, but ain't that somethin someone does wit their girl?" WHat was he suggesting? I still had no idea whether he wanted to go or not because all he had done since I asked was interogat me, I had no idea how to answer his question.
"Usually but, we could just-" spot stoped me before I could finish that sentance. Maybe because he didn't want to hear what would come next.
"Yeah I'll go wit ya" he turned around went back to his box. I sighed with relief. I noticed spot looked furociously through the box on his dresser .
"What are ya lookin for anyway" I asked walking over to where he stood.
"Nothin" he said and kept rummaging through the small box. How could he possibly still be looking the box couldn't have been much larger than his hand.
"Well obviously somethin" I stood on my top toes and peeled over his shoulder. He immediately closed the box and turned around to me.
"It's nothin" he said his eyes looking right into mine. I had no idea that someone could look so deep into someone's eyes until spot looked in mine in that moment. His eyes were so blue. Bluer than the water just outside the house. Way bluer. Spot broke the look and started taking off his clothes to go to bed.
"So I was thinkin, you sleep on the bed tonight and I'll sleep on the floor" I offered. He looked stressed from the meeting he had with this bated character earlier and he needed a good nights sleep.
"Addy, no" spot did a small eye roll and set out his sheet on the floor.
"Well" I said laying down on the hard wood, not the sheet, the plain old wood "I'm sleeping on the floor tonight, where you sleep is none of my buissiness"
Spot sighed and lied down on his sheet. And there we were. Complete silence, but neither of us really sleeping. The ground was not comfortable, at all. Not even a little. It would be worth it if spot had just hauled his stubborn ass up to the bed but he just went on laying there on his floor sheet. After what felt like hours but was probably just 30 minutes I finally spoke up.
"Hey spot" I whispered kind of loudly
"Yeah?"
"The floor isn't comfotable" I shifted around where I was lying for the thousandth time.
"Then go in the bed"
I didn't respond. Spot should sleep in his own bed, it's not mine. I closed my eyes and eventually dozed off. I only woke up two more times that night. The first time I was wrapped in spots floor sheet on the floor and spot was asleep on his bed. I smiled in throughout as I had finally won one of the battles between me and him. The second time I was still wrapped in spots floor sheet on the floor but this time I was laying in spots bed, next to spot. I was horrified in that moment. Had I gone up there on my own? Did he say I could? Was he going to yell at me when we woke up. I was going to get up and go back to the floor, but the bed was so nice and comfortable and being next to spot was warm and secure. Let's just say I fell back asleep before I could act upon any decision to go back to the hard back breaking floor.
Spot woke up before I did, as always. But today he did something that was very unlike him. He stayed in his bed. I woke up with my head on spots chest and my arm wrapped around his abdomain. I blinked my eyes awake and looked up to see spot reading something. And then it came to me. I was laying in spots chest. I pulled away from him rather alarmingly, causing him to look up from his book and down at me. I looked straight forward at the wall. I wished it wasn't this awkward. But for some reason it was only awkward for me.
" ya alright?" Spot asked with a surprisingly soft tone.
"Um yeah, just when did I get..on here"
"Youse was tossin and turnin and rolling around so I brought you up here and then ya slept like a baby" he looked at me briefly and then went back to his book. I looked down at my hands playing with the blanket and smiled. "So" he said, not looking up from the book "when is this ball"
"Friday" I was so excited, and nervous.the ball is always one of my favorite parts of the year, but this year since I'm going with a boy, and not just any boy, this boy. This handsome boy who I really liked. "It starts at 8"
"Alright what do I have to wear"
I smiled up at him my cutest and most convincing smile because I knew this was the part where I would have to do some convincing. "So, we have to get your measurements because Ellie's tailor miss Nancy always makes me and Ellie's dresses an' she's gonna make you a suit too" he looked down at me.
"Addy" he started "how that hell da you think I'm gonna pay for a custom made suit"
"Ya don't have ta! Ellie takes care of it all ya see she's kinda in the money" (a phrase which here means very rich)
"Can't I just wear my nice shirt"
"No. These balls are filled with fancy rich people in fancy rich clothes and if you don't fit in ya gonna get kicked out". I grabbed his arm and started to drag him out of the bed "cmon now if we don't get your measurements soon your gonna hafta go naked"
Spot smirked "wouldn'tcha like that?" The fact that he was currently only in his boxers didn't help.
I blushed "shuddup conlon" I pulled him by his hand across his room "ya got a tape measure somewhere here?"
"No" he smirked "what do you think I'm running here a department store?"
I looked up at him and sighed "I guess it's time them"
"Time for what?"
"Time for you to meet Ellie"
